Do you really feel an 18-yo is an adult?

I notice that most people call themselves adults at the age of 18 and divorce themselves from their nuclear families, as is expected of them. I believe it's cultural, in America an Europe young adults leave their homes and start a new life as soon as possible. In other less developed countries it's very common to hear of 30, 40 year-olds still living with the parents. There's also a name for the ones who have left and come back home -- boomerang generation. Are they failed adults that return to the womb so to speak?

Please vote on title question, are 18 yos adults, in your opinion?

yes 22
no 64

It's just not that cut and dry; yes or no. It really depends on the individual. Some are and some are 27+ and still as immature as they were at 12.

They are capable of handling responsibility at that age, in the sense that they've been taught what it is to be an adult and grasp a level of understanding consequential actions. Of course, this is generalized. As Gypsy said, it isn't that cut and dry. How well an individual handles responsibility will always be the narrative for who is or isn't adult.

Ehh. The line between childhood and adulthood is completely arbitrary. There's no place you could draw it which would make the two groups better defined. 18 is as good a place as any.

The word "eighTEEN" itself says enough about that age. There are mature 18 year olds but most of us are still just kids that have barely started handling adult problems.

No. Im not sure exactly what age is an adult but its closer to 22-25, NOT 18. I don't think 18 year olds should join the military if they cant even drink legally...I know I wasn't grown up at 18.

Well,i read an article that the brain doesnt really mature until 25. And girls mature faster than guys. And im not happy with the legal system and what rights you have when. I started drinking at 14 and apparently in my state i cant legally now (was 21) until 25? Wtf? Im responisble. I can handle doing that. I know people that are older than me that cant. If you always follow that... think of all the stuff you cant do. Im going to boot camp in a few months. I could get killed before im 25. Ill drink whenever the hell i please, assuming i have the money. I want to live. I think all that bullshit is stupid. And Germany is doing just fine. Their drinking age is freakin 16. So my friend is sitting over there younger than me drinking a lemon flavoured fuckin beer, and i cant. There arent a bunch of drunk as teens over there 24/7 just because someone said they could drink. Its all bull.. and it all depends. Really, i dont think "adult" was ever a real thing. Its just another way to *face wrinkles in disgust* organize the civilians. The population. If we talk about another country, do we not usually say- a man. A woman. A boy. A girl.? ..I think in general that those words all put an age group into our heads. But we are much more regulated here. *Ew.*

Nope. Adulthood is more like mid-late 20s or even early 30s. For some, no age is true adulthood for them (They got that Child At Heart thing going on).

No, I'm 20 and still don't see myself as an adult, maybe more of a 'young adult'

It depends on the individual... Ive seen som mature 18 year olds who could pass as 30 and I've seen some that are still stuck as a 13 year old

It's rare that an 18 year old has the maturity of a 25+ year old. It's like a light goes off once they reach at least 25 and then they are more of an adult.

I don't think an 18 year old is an adult. I believe no one is under 21.
