I think a world where all people regardless of whether they are persons of faith, agnostics or atheists refrained from trying press their will on one another would be best! I think the problem more about people wanting to control others than anything else. Yes there are religious people who want to control others, but there are atheists who want to control their fellow man as well. I think this problem is a character flaw that is fundamental to human nature. We can look at our closest relatives, the chimpanzees and see this same ugly flaw.
Aye.. We should be more like bonobos than chimpanzees.. Almost the same animal but with a very different and peaceful society!
It's only the 'desert cult' religions.. mainly Christian and Muslim that want to control others.. The older religions seem happier to live and let live.
its funny but the atheists , wind up practicing religion complete with bibles popes and superstition when you take away a Creator. they invent false methods of creation and turn it into a pseudoscience religion. why ,they have to do this, is beyond my comprehension. then they wind up hating a God that doesn't even exist and waste a lifetime complaining about religion. ? thats batshit crazy i know.
Nah. religion and mainly Christianity is responsible for the creation of the world's greatest nations (like the USA). Its principles and morals helped building them. A world without it probably wouldn't have sustained. It's easy to realize that just by looking at nations who have succeeded and nations who have failed. And no matter if it also brought wars, if it wasn't for America, American Indians would still be worshipping the sun and kill each other using arrows.
So getting rid of religion will not solve your problems. Chances are people are going to take the word "freedom" too literally and will not get anything done, that's how it usually works.
Also, I would rather everyone to be equal under one imaginary being, rather than under a tyrannical government ;) But that's just my opinion :p
Yes. Especially those shitty religions that think they're the only correct one.. Christians, Muslims and Jews.
I wouldn't mind the likes of Buddhists, Taoists and Hindus carrying on as they've no problem with what other people think.
I agree, and just want to springboard off your post and elaborate.
I think the issue with The Abrahamic religions (especially Islam right now, not so much Christianity anymore) is how politicised they are.
A private/personal belief in the supernatural or something higher, within reason, is harmless. Yes we can go into whether it's sensible or scientifically validated, but in terms of the morality of the situation, it's not a threat to anyone. That's why the "Eastern" religions are very tolerable and don't get much heat from secularists, because they are inherently personal and generally secular in nature.
When religion is politicised though, all hell breaks loose. The reason Middle Eastern countries have terror, public executions, blasphemy laws, modesty codes and fucking stupid stringent religious rules has EVERYTHING to do with the politicised status of Islam in those countries. This doesn't come from nowhere, this is the work of fanatics, who take directly from the example of their prophet to create a society like they create.
The same can be said of Medieval Europe, where again, fanatics were taking the worst bits of the Bible to rule over everyone with an iron fist. The West and Christianity look cuddly and liberal today because of secularism, because religion has been ripped out of state affairs and been reduced down to some blubbering Republicans. That doesn't make Christianity "nice" necessarily, it just means it's a dog with a jaw clamp on. Islam has to go the same way now.
Spot on. I've said the same in conversation with a few people.. Islam is currently going through exactly what Christianity went through 500 years ago. You're right about the politicisation.. Even Buddhists can get a bit shirty when there's some land being stolen! I've many a time explained this to people who naively think the Northern Ireland troubles are about disagreements on religion!
Yes then everyone could be truly moral, instead of basing there morality from what it says in a book.
Religion is responsible for more than half of the problems in the world.
Religion is just used mostly as a scape goat or excuse to get away with complaining about something or hurting/killing someone.
I coukd join the fray but I'll hold off for now. I have a big seminar tomorrow.
Is the question really about God? Or about using ontology - that is, the collective understanding about why we exist and what it means to be human - as a means of securing political power? Look at China under Mao, Pol Pot in Cambodia... they were among the few officially atheistic societies that have existed, and they have resulted in mass suffering all the same. The reason there are more examples of theistic societies gone wrong than atheistic ones, is that there have been more theistic societies, period. It's a numbers game. And by the way, although Buddhism in the sense of its official doctrines is a peaceful religion (as Christianity is), a quick wikipedia search will show you how governments have tried to enforce it using violence: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddhism_and_violence . Much like Christian and Islamic governments did. Those governments just happen to be a long way away from much of the English-speaking world, culturally and geographically, so maybe we don't hear about it much. And we mustn't forget that there are massive commercial interests in buddhism as imported into the West - you only need to look at the prevalence of yoga, and how easy it is to get your hands on a Buddha statue on the highstreet. It's not in the interests of the massive industry behind this one-size-fits-all pluralistic 'McBuddhism' to draw attention to the violence done in the name of Buddha on his continents of origin, where Buddha is culturally and politically fundamental and bound to a majoritarian belief system very different from ours. The East is also on the fringes of the Western traditional-liberal ideological conflict, rather than at the centre, in Western Europe and the US, where most of the attention is. As Eastern religions and ideologies are in some ways more an ally to liberal values han an enemy, it is not in the interests of cultural and educational institutions to draw attention to the crimes committed in the name of, say, Karl Marx, as it would be to draw attention to the crimes of the Catholic Church.
In sum, I think the moment you have an idea about the truth of the fundamental questions of human existence is, and try to enforce it, there is conflict. Should we stop trying to find out the truth about the universe we live in? Then science and knowledge would atrophy. No, people will always strive to know the truth, and to act on it, and to encourage others to act on it. That's not going to change if God is left out the picture. And they will fight over it eventually, because they are humans. I actually think it would be fairer to say that only divine intervention could *stop* humans being humans!
hmm... a world without religion would be different for sure. from my point of view there are 2 ways this could happen. one is if there was no religion in the first place. while it would be facinating to say the least i mean a lot if wars wouldn't of happned like the cursades for example. history would be a lt different , and option 2 is if the would just stopped believing. first off i see many wars still going on in the middle east for pride and way of life if not for religion. many thing across the U.S.A. would change as well. because of the lack of religion people for anti gay along with other things would no longer have a " valid reason". many things in schools would change too. many pirvate christian schools would shut down resulting in a surge on public schools. another thing that would change in schools is the science of eveloution would be taught much more due to the lack of protests agnist it. ( sorry 4 missed spelled words it is late where i am currently and im tired as fuck )
There would just be other divisive tactics used to keep people fighting amongst each other.
Religion has offered art, philosophy, education and many more. I certainly do not believe it would be any better not to have it. Humans would have found other ways to hate each other lmao.
Within an agricultural society, no. However there could be belief in god without the specific anti-sex anti-gay etc. Stuff that comes with many religions. And our method of spirituality could be more of a practice like Buddhism than a religion in a more western sense. However without agriculture religion would go away on its own
I recently saw a pretty good post asking if a atheist society would be successful so I decided to ask if y'all thought if a apathiest society would be successful
