Do you think being gay is a choice

I have been openly gay for a year and I came out to my family a tear before that where I live is in a small town in a more conservative community. Sometimes people get violent and drive past my house yelling things some don't care and others ask questions like why am I gay? I have done research but I want to know what other people think about it if is a choice or not if you have any information for or against I would love to hear so I can learn more about the subject since it does bother me so much.

hmm I think in your burgeoning years of sexual/hormonal development you discover your sexuality. there are certain things that can influence your sexual attraction/nature, but for the most part it is what is naturally inside you to become, sort of like fate.

    I don't believe that it's a choice, but I also don't believe that it's purely biological/genetic either.

I think there are some genetic factors that may make some people more pre-disposed to being homosexual, such as hormone imbalances. But I believe there are environmental factors that play a role as well.

No, not everyone is "born that way".

This may offend some and I'm sorry in advance.. I think you are born with the thoughts and urges however I do believe you could choose not to act on it and live a straight life if you really wanted to.. Just my opinion.

No, and if there's any part that is down to nurture over nature, I don't think it's something you're in control of; you can't choose what you find attractive.

Oh, research is all over the map on this one. There was a scientist that claimed to have discovered a shared genetic marker amongst homosexuals (Xq28) orginating from maternal DNA, but they have yet to isolate a specific base pairs. Unfortunately, Research on the subject is drastically underfunded, due to "political" reasons.

There are all types of theories, even theories suggesting that homosexuality might be a natural evolved genetic variant developed to counteract population growth in a species.

I personally know someone who identified as heterosexual her whole life, and now identifies as homosexual after a sexual assault. Who am I to say that she is or isn't gay.

For the most part, I do believe that it is determined at birth. It makes no sense to believe that it is a choice, when so many people are ashamed of their sexuality, however, I do think there are exceptions. Human sexuality is an incredibly complicated mixture of factors.

Shit, my comment was all unclear.

      EDIT TO SHITTY COMMENT:
No, I do not believe it is a choice. That would make no sense. There are so many people that are homosexual who kill themselves, hate themselves, spend their whole life lying to themselves, or go through one of those god fucking awful "pray the gay away" programs...none of that would be happening if it was as easy as just choosing not to be gay.

If it were a choice, I'd fall for a woman and be married to said woman. I can pretend, but that won't be good for me or the woman I lie to. I honestly wish I could be straight, but I've got to deal with the cards I was dealt. I like men and there's nothing I can do to change that.

If youre gay surely you know? Did you choose to like men? I don't think it is a choice. I think its just how youre made, without sounding harsh.
I don't have anything against gay peoples :)

I'm gay I know I was born this way, I also know some people that have told me they have chosen to be. So I guess it's different for everyone. Who knows, who cares. Just be human, be kind, and live your life happily and let others do the same. In the end all that matters is how happy you lived and how much positive impact you have on others.

It is absolutely NOT a choice. You know how you feel, no one else knows what's going on inside you.

Here is a theory I've heard of, it's to do with antibodies in the mother's womb interacting with the foetus, and it's also sometimes associated with a mother who has already had a few other male babies ...for some reason the antibodies build up...anyway here is an article about it:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/5120004.stm

Oh and as this is to do with antibodies in the womb it's not exactly genetic so wouldn't show up in your DNA. It's an environmental thing during the development stages of the foetus.

I've done some research and I have heard this as well as when the woman has a good immunity it can attack the male. Their is an island tribe in Asia I think that actually has a population of gay males that take care of the offspring and those with women with more children also are more likely to have a gay brother. Another in Oceania has three words one meaning male, female, and another a word we can't translate which is specifically for gay males, They are treated as a separate gender altogether.

Being gay is NOT a choice. However, it is a choice to partake in gay sexual activity. For example, most Buddhist monks are straight (I assume) yet they abstain from sex altogether.

No it's not a choice! WE don't get to chose our sexual orientation or our sexual preferences PERIOD Get comfortable with who, what, & how you are because no matter what that's just you and your beautiful. I can't comprehend why people are hated/disliked for something they had no choice in. Low testosterone levels in the 3rd trimester of your momma's pregnancy with you are likely the reason. It's time for ALL haters to go have a look at themselves. It's probably their hate of their own preferences &/or orientation thats REALLY bothering them. Sad Truth

No. Being Gay, Straight, Asexual are all traits you're born with. You can't help who you're born as. If people could, most wouldn't be the people they started out.

Hasn't it been friggin scientifically proven that In the majority of people, it's from birth. Or not something that just pops up one day, oh... I'm gay. You may realize it like that, but if u do you've most likely been ignoring what your body has been telling you for ur whole life. You know something is different, you just can't out ur I get on it. Then one dY you find out love doesn't have to be constricted to a single gender, you find out that not every one loves the same way, when it is exactly the same... Idk lol it doesn't make much sense does it?

I think the vast majority of gay people are just born gay

But I wouldn't discount that for some attraction can be nurtured one way or the other through learned preferences / life experiences, and i think for a very small percentage it could a choice (not to mention political lesbians lol)

Overall I think saying anyone chooses a "gay lifestyle" is a load of crap unless you're talking about select confused teenagers

I think sexuality is fluid for some and for others it is finite. Everything, environment, genes, it all mixes and makes you. I think people can choose who they sleep with or who they marry or what sexuality they identify with but when you wipe away all those choices there lies who you are and that's not up for choice.

Does this mean you think decisions make a person gay like if they choose to be a beautician? Like I said I am gay however I could give a shit less what any of things are to be honest and I don't even know what some of it is. It's close minded to think that a movie determines sexuality if your girlfriend promised to have sex with you if you watched the movie wouldn't you go? Try to back up your statement and get validity behind next time you choose this otherwise it seems silly.

I don't believe it's a choice at all. I believe in my own lifetime that I was born in a male body but my inner self was female. I went most of my life trying to choose not to give in to the inner feelings. I use the label cross dresser/bisexual but I am seeing a therapist and now I understand that I am transgender MTV and I now live alone and live as a woman all the time. That said, I'm attracted to men because mentally I'm a woman. I have gone years fighting this issue and it took me accepting who I was born to be to be able to live an ordinary life. I'm happy living as a woman and the depression level has come way down.

I posted the poll I'm not sure if you can find that somewhere or whatever but just to be clear I am stating it. I have grown up in a conservative community and there are definitely NO environmental factors I due think it has a lot to do with genetics while I have done research on why men are gay and have found that it seems their are many genetic factors behind it. I haven't found a genetic reason as to why women are lesbian if someone could find it I would love it, it seems they experience a traumatic event and then are lesbian if you are a lesbian I would like to know your take and if you have found a genetic link I would also like to hear it though the poll doesn't exclude males but I find lesbianism to be much more mysterious and in need of an answer

The reason that the available data is limited is because there has been very little research done on the subject, mostly because funding gets rejected due to the politics behind the issue. Right now the available data is limited to males because the studies done all included male test subjects only. That's just the way science works- nobody wants to make overarching conclusions about anything that wasn't directly involved in the research, because then the conclusions themselves can be challenged.

The same data could theoretically be extended to women, however. They are just as likely to inherit a genetic sequence carried by their mother, and can carry it themselves without being homosexual.

There are studies, however, showing different physical brain development in homosexual females, and that could be evident of a biological predisposition.
