Do you think children should practice religion?

By practicing religion I mean going to church, mosque etc depending on their religion. Do you think that children are too young to be taught some of their beliefs and that they do not really understand it, they just learn it. Or do you think that it is good they practice their religion at such a young age?

I'm assuming "no" means I don't think they should practice religion. That would be my answer.

A child is not old enough to undertand what they are committed to. By the time they are they have been indoctrinated enough and would typically find it hard to see other view points or look at their religion critically.

This comes from the same person who would take that SAME kid and indoctrinate him about atheism.

Everyone is born an atheist. Yes, atheism should be the default viewpoint of a child. Referring to a child as Christian/Jewish, etc would be no different than referring to the child as a Republican or Democrat.

I agree. My mom started trying to make me a Christian when I was about four. But when I was eleven I revealed that I didn't care about religion and that I was an athiest. My mom said I couldn't choose so I kept being an athiest in secret.

Children should not be told that there is a magical man in the sky watching you every second of every day and if they piss him off he Will send you to a place of torture until the end of time... If they wanna believe in fairy tales when they are a adult, then that's on them

no. they are not too young to learn.

you teach them how to talk, eat, and behave ... why should you not teach religion too?

Yeah you might as well teach them how to suck cocks and fuck girls at that age as well, so later in life they would be scared of sex.

      Gosh Angel, you disappoint me.

what the hell does that have to do with religion

unless you have a very unusual faith...

        • I think what his point is, is that if you are going to teach them religion you can go ahead and teach them other "adult" behaviors as well.

Though I dont understand how being religion got equated to sex at all.

Religion is nice to believe in if you want, but there is no heaven or hell and certainly no "being seated at the right hand of the father when you die" nonsense. Religion serves a great purpose in teaching behaviors for civilized society. Outside of that its a bunch of horseshit. Its tailored to play on people's fear of death by reassuring people that life really doesnt end when you die, if you obey the church you will get to float on a cloud and see all your dead relatives and "be happy".

How much does that not make sense?

          • I think that a lot of the religious teachings were made to keep people obeying in society. It could have been made up the the leaders of the tribe or country to keep people believing them and do what they tell them to do.

It could also just be beliefs from people thousands of years ago when the world was more of a new place to humans and it was surely something a lot better than we see it today and so they made up that there must be a god that created this world.

Also the church changes rules when it feels like it. For example in the 1960's they started making hell seem like a worse place to children to stop them from going out and enjoying themselves like everyone else. And a long time ago the church banned alcohol because other people started making it rather than the church and they made it out to be unholy. Even though the church itself made it, they just started losing out on money.

Sounds to me as if a lot of religions just are for making people act in a certain way that is required at the time.

            Religion isn't an adult-only behavior.

Otherwise there would be an age limit on when you can start practicing.

As for your statements on heaven or hell... that again is your personal belief and not necessarily fact.

            • Its a fact that heaven/hell havent been proven to exist, of course it hasnt been proven to not exist either.

Just applying simple logic to the question of life after death gives a reasonable argument against it.

Whats more logical to exist : 1. Another plane of existence where everyone who obeyed the church or lived a pious life goes where everything they ever wanted is provided for them, for everyone they ever knew to be there with them and love them and blah blah blah. OR 2. You just die and death is the absence of life and existence. You dont experience joy, you dont experience pain, you dont experience the passage of time.

I would say option 2 is alot more logical to me as well.

i think that when children are young they believe whatever they are told to believe. It's the same deal Santa Clause and the Tooth Fairy (not that I'm comparing religion to that obviously). They don't really have enough independant thought until they are at least in their teens. I was a Catholic and a believer when I was very young, but when i reached my teens I became unsure in what I believed in. I don't think their is really a correct answer to this one. They can if they want but they dont know what they are doing at full.

It is wrong to force opinion onto an impressionable child. They must decide for themselves what to believe in.

My mom made me go to church as a kid and I hated it so much that I'm atheist now.

Of course, I don't believe in god, but.... this is embarrassing... i'm mainly atheist because i have so many bad memories of church.

I don't know why Christians/etc, and Atheists keep fighting about the same shit over and over and fucking over again!

Makes me want to be neither Christian, nor an Atheist, both seem annoying as hell.

I don't really care if you think God exsists, or if you think he doesn't.

    Why care?

If he exsists great! If not great!

  • I argued this with members of my family who are strong christians. They just got angry and said that "scripture says that children should be taught..." and I was trying to tell them well thats basically the bible telling the brainwashed parents to begin the brainwashing of their children. They didn't like that haha

    • Religious people are some of the most judgmental, assuming people you will ever meet. Really phony in all honesty. They blindly assume that what they believe is the truth, everything else is false and doesnt exist. They also think nothing of judging other's based upon their own narrow set of beliefs.

Ask them what God's plan was when he created the dinosaurs and let them rule the world for hundreds of millions of years, was that just him "messing around" or "having fun" ? Dinosaurs are proven to have existed based on the fossil record. Religious people have no logical argument when it comes to dinosaurs. I always love bringing that up with them.

Why not just create man at that time instead of giant lizards?

I was raised to believe in a higher being, no specific religion, just that there's a god.

Now I'm an atheist and I don't believe there's a god, so being raised to believe in one thing doesn't mean it will happen. However, I don't think it's right to teach them religion because although I'm now atheist, I feel like I was misinformed and wronged in a way:L

I don't see what other purpose trying to get your children to practice religion would have beside trying to get them to believe it, I think it's wrong that some parents talk about it as if it's fact. People should be able to look at the options and consider which *they* believe, and I don't think children would do that.

I honestly think something like Aesop's Fables is the best thing for a child to read/ be told about. No prejudice or hate, just words of wisdom:)

I think kids need to have all the facts and be exposed to various different religious beliefs so they can make an informed decision when they're adults. Brainwashing is a no-no in my book.

  • Its all part of the control that religion needs to have over people to keep them coming back like sheeps to the slaughter.

If you are taught as a child that you need to go to church every sunday so that god likes you and you go to heaven its easier to believe as you get older and really start to question the world around you.

Religion is a crock of shit by the way. All of them.
