Do you think it should be illegal to own just one dog?

Dogs are incredibly social animals, and so it could be considered cruel to keep them isolated from their own kind. Some of them never see another dog their entire lives. If they do meet another dog, then it's usually just for an instant while out for a walk, before their owners quickly tell them to "come along". But in that instant, you can see their sheer joy as they meet another one of their own kind. People view this as cute, but it's actually really tragic to see that what should be the most normal constant thing in their lives has been scaled back to a couple seconds every now and then (if they're lucky), so that they'd view it as a highlight of their life. Of course, dogs do bond with their owners as their family. But the fact that they become so overjoyed at the sight of another dog shows that they do need other dogs in their lives also. Do you agree with this or do you think it's ok to own just a single dog?

Not unless you spend little to no time with it, but most people spend a lot of time with their dog. You kind of have to, they are difficult to leave unless you have someone to watch it for you.

Fuck that. I laugh at any law I don't agree with.

Lol no and they're social animals exactly why you get a dog so you can be their social friend for life.

    This is the silliest idea.

If dogs ruled the world and I was a pet human, I would love to never see any of my own kind. Unless I wanted to mate.
(I'm kidding about this... or am I?)

No, that law would be stupid if enacted.

Some pet owners can only handle one dog, and some dogs don’t get a long with others.

    • Well then that would be unfortunate for the pet owner alright since they wouldn't be able to get any dogs then, but it'd be to avoid animal cruelty. Their happiness and quality of life is more important than someone owning a dog.

If a dog doesn't get along with others then fair enough, someone could own just that one dog alright then, but dogs like that would be the exception to the rule anyway. So that wouldn't be any reason to disagree with this law.

This is a stupid idea. A.some people can not afford multiple pets B.many pet owners will get multiple pets C.some dogs are territorial D.some dogs live on farms and are there to protect the stock D.some dogs are meant to be emotional support to victims, elderly, victims and disables E.most owners have to walk dogs so they do get to socialize anyways F.making this rule means there would be more dogs put down in shelters

        • Fair points with A, B and F. People are stubborn and would want a dog regardless. So even if they clearly wouldn't be able to take care of multiple dogs, they'll get them anyway, deluding themselves into thinking that they could manage it. I do think people should have to pass a means test anyway before getting a dog, so that could solve this problem then. But maybe society isn't ready for that level of animal welfare just yet either, animals are still treated as objects used to fulfill our own desires more than autonomous beings deserving of a full life unfortunately.

As for some dogs being territorial, I already addressed this in my reply, it'd be ok to own just one dog in that case. I don't see why multiple dogs couldn't live on a farm, if anything surely it'd be easier for farmers than for anyone else. I hadn't thought about emotional support animals, but they could also be an exception, so that hardly condemns this idea either. It's ridiculous to think that sniffing another dog for a few fleeting seconds every now and then while out for a walk, before their owner hurries them along, is socialising.

I don't think you ever owned a dog. Walking a dog means literally every owner, freind, passer by is and is gonna want to interact in some way.

I have owned a dog before and brought her for walks regularly, but that only happened like a handful of times ever.

Highlight of their life? Hah! My family had an overprotective Alaskan Husky named Blackie who hated other dogs and would get jealous of any other dog that wasn't her. Putting another dog in that home with Blackie would've been a death sentence to that other dog. XD

    • I'd say that would be the rare exception though, most dogs would love another dog as a companion. Besides, this would only warrant voting "It depends" for this question rather than "No".

No OP you are a complete idiot snd need to research dog breeds. Pretending this is a rare occurrence shows you know nothing about animals. This is more common depending on breed. Don't be stupid.

        • I have done some research on this, and from what I've read from the experts, it seems that the majority of dogs would get on well with another dog in the household. No, I don't know about which dog breeds would be more suited to just human companionship, but that was one point of this post, to stir up conversation about it. But instead people just spout out "You're stupid" and "This is a dumb idea" because they don't like the idea that they're not giving their pets the life they deserve, and don't want to face the possibility that they're actually being cruel to their beloved pets.

You mean you are lying? They have videos from breeders, dog shows,, shelters and dog trainers explaining which breeds are more dominant and terroritorial. Example things like Rottweiler and pits can be more stubborn. Boxers while used for fighting naturally have a very gentle nature to them. Mastiff while before used for fighting are actually very gentle as well. They also have lists of family friendly dogs which have more docile breeds like pugs. So you are striaght up lying. Breeds like Akita sometimes have problem with other breeds.

What? How am I lying? I did do some research on it, and that is what I found. You're just blatantly accusing me of lying with no cause to do so.

Fair enough if you can list a couple breeds that might not do well living with another dog, I never claimed that this would work with 100% of dogs. But I still think that this would be a good idea for the majority of dogs. Anyway, have those breeders and trainers explicitly said that these breeds wouldn't like living with another dog? Because just saying that they would be more dominant or stubborn doesn't necessarily prove that they wouldn't like it.

I dont like government overreach and I think its just petty and silly for big brother to come tell you you need atleast 2 dogs. Ive grown to hate dogs since I have kids you have to worry about some random dog running up and attacking your kids. My neighbors dog got out one time and ran into my yard looking very aggressive scaring my wife. Luckily I have fences I put up. I will shoot that fucking thing if it even nips at my kids.

I dont feel that way. Shen you have a good wage you dont want to have to pay those europe tax rates. Instead of paying 40% like I would in germany I pay 6% because the government doesnt redistribute so much of the middleclass money to help those that wont help themselves.

Thats why i dont like big government because they rob the middleclass.

  • I'm seeing a lot of disagreement with the idea for this law but no good arguments against it, just a load of "That's stupid" or "That's a dumb law", which is worthless. And I'm surprised at the votes for this poll considering the amount of animal lovers that I thought were on this site. But then that proves the point I often make that so-called animal lovers don't really love animals at all, as in they don't really care about what's best for animals and put them above themselves. They just love how animals make them feel, and if they have to deny them a better life in order to gain those warm feelings from them, then so be it. And so they instinctively just recoil from and lash out against anything like this that threatens their ability to continue to use animals for their own ends.

I see your point here actually. They are pack animals. It’s a similar argument to the ones against zoos, or having “exotic” pets like flying squirrels, where the right environment just can’t be provided.

In individual circumstances though I think it’s more of a grey area. A lot of dogs seem perfectly happy living with only humans, or humans and cats. I think to an extent they see us as their pack. And the alternative might be a lot more dogs stuck in cages all day at shelters, or worse, because people couldn’t afford or didn’t want multiple dogs.

Maybe a happier medium would be some kind of public awareness campaign like there was years ago about spaying and neutering. Puts the idea in people’s minds without getting them up in arms about rules and laws. Unlike dogs, humans seem to hate being told what to do, almost above all else.

      • Glad to see a comment with some thought put into it. Yeah, maybe 100% of dogs wouldn't necessarily prefer living around lots of other dogs (even if they do enjoy meeting up with other dogs when out for a walk), it'd depend on the individual dog, or it might depend on their breed. I'd say they do view us as part of their pack alright, although they must also know on some level that we're not one of them, otherwise why would they get so excited around dogs but not really around other humans.

That's a good point alright about people being overly ambitious with thinking they can take care of multiple dogs, only to end up overwhelmed. I hadn't thought of that. In a perfect world though, not just anybody would be able to buy a dog, they would have to pass a means test first, but if people are against this idea so much then I doubt they'd respond well to that. So in reality, this could be a problem alright.

Yeah, I think that would be a good idea alright. People would feel better about it if they came to this conclusion themselves. I think society is deep in denial with how it views animals though. People sincerely believe themselves to love animals, while simultaneously confining them to a small house away from their natural environment, and isolating them from all other members of their species, for their entire lives, all for their own self-gratification. It's completely contradictory, and people don't even realise it. Or if they do then they just perform some mental gymnastics to convince themselves that it's somehow ok. So society would be very slow to confront this about itself and progress.
