Only as cruel as lining up humans and chopping off all their fingers at the second joint.
However I have a diffrent opionion on severity next to term of a human finger I agree it is very cruel .
I do not thinks it is like chopping off there fingers I thinks its more like grabbing someones hand and cutting off all the nails on there hands like they did in Higurashi.
Nah, cat nails aren't like human nails. They're the equivalent of the last bits of our fingers. Not in terms of flesh, but in terms of how the cat uses them. It really would be like chopping our fingers short. :/
I know but you speak of use I speak of material there nail is like what the human nail is . So its just a retractiable nail they have more use for thier nails than we do of ours but they do not have bone attached they do have muscle but after a certien piont so do poeple .
believe it or not there is this post that is carpeted and rubbed w/ catnip they seem to like that. Smartass aside, when you declaw the cat you are removing their best weapon and main for of defense against harm or prey. It would be the same thing as setting a man out in the wild with no tools to use, fucked.
Fuck ya! It's super cruel.
I think it should be illegal. It so easy to just trim the tips of their nails with a pair of nail clippers - breaking a cat's toes, then removing the tip is overkill.
It is absolutely cruel, barbaric, and should never be done. How could it be okay to mutilate a cat because you don't want your furniture scratched? Cats scratch, and if people can't stand a cat acting like a cat they should get a dog. Declawing makes the cat very nervous and insecure because when the cat feels threatened it's left defenseless. They wouldn't be able to hunt or even scratch themselves properly without their claws. Every expert I've ever heard says this is wrong. No decent responsible vet would agree to do this.
Is it cruel to cut off your fingers? Yeah it is pretty cruel to do this to a cat. It also creates a lot of health problems. It is also cruel to cut off a bulls horns.
If you know the anatomy of these animals you would not question if this is cruel or not. Things like horns are not like the nails you see on people. They are more complicated. The very tip of a horn like on a bull or a goat is nothing but bone.
Anything below the tip is actually like bone around tissue and blood. So you are cutting into flesh. When they dewclaw a cat its like removing part of a finger. So not as simple as simply removing a nail.
Cat nails are like horns. The tips are fine to trim. If you cut beyond that you are cutting into tissue. Why if you do not cut an animals claws correctly they will bleed. Unlike peoples who have the nail on the service. Animals have it all the way around.
However some cat have had to get claws removed because of infection. It should never be just because you are scared of damaging your furniture. It is like saying "Your feed smell so I am going to cut them off". Which is honestly really stupid and incredibly cruel. Also a word of advice to cat owners. It is better if your house has a flat service because that ends up dulling the claws of your cats or just any animal really. Cats also need high areas to survey the areas. So they will be happier if they have somewhere high they can sit and climb on.
I don't believe in de-clawing a cat, but sometimes it has to be done. All cats have claws. It shouldn't be done, only if you have to.
No it isn't. But it depends on whose perspective it is in. The cat may need to fend for itself someday may be your thought, but if you don't abandon it and take care of it you have nothing to worry about. Declawing can also be a good thing, because you don't have to hold it down and trim it's nails all the time. It also helps the cat to not get it's claws caught in long carpet or blankets, and to not get ingrown nails. If you have more than one cat, it avoids vicious "claw your face of" fights, and avoids you getting hurt during bathing, brushing, play, or tooth-brushing time. Declawing a cat is perfectly fine.
YOU CAN TEACH A CAT TO USE A SCRATCHING POST. PEOPLE ARE SO GODDAMN CRUEL. ITS CHOPPING OFF THEIR JOINT. THEY CAN NO LONGER DEFEND THEMSELVES AS WELL AND MANY TIMES THEY STOP USING THE LITTER BOX BECAUSE IT HURTS THEM TO SCRAPE AROUND. MAKES ME SO SAD
Its cruel because it is kind of unnecessary. Still, living with a cat is more cruel. :-P Anyone have a Bucky Katt? Hilarious!

Yes. Along with tail docking and ear cropping, declawing should also be illegal.
Just to clarify, when you (people commenting) refer to declawing, are you talking about front and back or just front claws?
Yeah because I remember I did then had To let him go in The wild because we moved. I've regretted it ever since!!:'(
yes...they love to scratch stuff and stretch with their claws, it would be like taking away our ability to scratch stuff when it itches
IF YOU DON'T WANT YOUR FURNITURE SCRATCHED, DONT GET A CAT!!!! I can only imagine it would be like having your finger nails removed. NOT PLEASANT!! How could anyone even consider doing this to a family pet? And as one of the first commenters says, get a scratching post! I have 4 cats and leather sofas, and after a little persuasion with catnip and physically carrying them to the post when they go to scratch I have no problem whatsoever. Totally unnecessary and very cruel.
If the cat is hurting himself or others around him very often then it should probably be declawed but to just do it for your own convenience of not having your couch scraped at once in a while is pretty messed up.
Scratching Is a natural instinct to cats...........if you take that away from them thats mean and..............well their screwed
yes, it's cruel, it's very cruel. the only reason you should get your cat declawed is if they magorly scratch up your furniture.
Depends I guess. If it's been neutered and still attacks people then MAYBE. If it's just clawing people sometimes or scratching furniture then that's just natural.
Don't like the idea of de-clawing.
It's not a 'few days of pain' ....... it's a lifetime of living without some of its essential tools for life. Cats use claws for grooming themselves more than they do for fighting - and they're a vital tool for climbing which is a natural function for it. Your comment "If the cat isn't happy, well the cat can just go live outside and see how better off their life is going to be" is just plain stupid - best you let it go live somewhere else while it's still got otsclaws. .
looks like you care more about inanimate objects than about your kitten.. =[
The cat does not know that you dumb fuck and if you buy a cat you should probobly figure this out. You are not someone who should be owning animals since you care so little about the well being of the creature.
