Do you think online dating is a real relationship?

I know a few people who are dating others, who haven't even met in person yet. I am curious as to what people think of this. Would you consider this an actual relationship even if you aren't in the physical presence of each other? And if someone did consider it real, is that normal?

I wouldn’t say so. If you used to be able to see each other in real life and circumstances changed that or you’re actively planning to meet with each other in real life that’s different but if you’re ‘dating’ someone half way across the world and you’re not even attempting to meet in person that’s not a relationship.

While you can develop an online friend... Dating. Real Dating requires being able to meet and do things together in real life... Only then do you really learn about a person and if you are likely long term compatible.

I don't see how it can be truly meaningful if you have never met. It is still a relationship though, in the sense that relationships come in all sorts of varieties. Penpals have a relationship. An online tutor and their pupil have a relationship. People who just met in a bar and went into the toilets to fuck are in a relationship, until the point at which they walk away from each and stop communicating. They're just different sorts of relationships.

It is in no way comparable to a face to face relationship, if that's what you're asking. But it doesn't make it worthless. You two might get a lot out of the online conversations that you have. There is value in that.

I don't get the long-distance thing. There arent any people in your local geographical area to hook up with?

If you’ve never met, then no, not that kind of relationship.

Yes and no. I would say this is dependent on how long you have interacted with the person in question. Cause There is a huge difference knowing a person naturally and physically and knowing a person by the merits of what they tell you. Usually people will perceive themselves better than they actually are so they can try to score a relationship. Now there will come a time where you will have to meet the person face to face and that is usually the moment where things can either fall apart or where the real relationship gets started.
