Do you think pets (cats/dogs) know when we are sad?

Whenever I'm really upset, like having a full blown breakdown my cat sits with me and curls right up with me even if it's in the bathroom (on the floor) which she never goes in because she hates water. The other night I was really upset and she clawed at my door relentlessly until I let her in then sat with me in bed for hours until I stopped crying.

    Yup, for sure.

My cat snuggles into me if I'm feeling down, but if I actually start sobbing then she gets freaked out and just stands right in front of me meowing. It's like she's saying "what do I do?! How do I help?!" She usually settles for rubbing her face on my feet. It's not quite the same as a hug but it's nice to know that she cares.

I'm a dog lover myself, but you have probably heard that animals can sense when shit is about to happen ? (Earthquake, etc). Some dogs can alert when a person is about to have a seziure. So with the senses they have I would say there is not even an argument to that question. Just a big fat yes. They do can and usually will. (Dogs are man's best friend).

Unpopular opinion but Nah they don't have that level of empathy, that's just human projection. With the cat example its more likely that you were more reserved in your upset state than normal, which is known to draw them in. and for dogs i heard that they think you look evil if you're crying since it's an unrecognized emotion to them, so they get submissive out of fear that you'll hurt them

  • Well when I am angry my dogs know. They keep low to the ground and stay out my way. They seem to know when I am extra happy as well cause the wont leave me alone and they get all waggy tail and jumpy

Animals are very perceptive, especially dogs and cats! My only question would be why on Earth would have the door closed to where the cat can't get in inside?

I'm blessed enough that I don't have to live with other people, but I don't live alone, because I live with my cat, and I don't really close my doors inside my house, because I don't want to inconvenience the cat.

Perhaps if you have a round doorknob you might want to consider replacing it with a lever style doorknob so your cat can learn to open by herself. It's important to always consider what we can do to make our lives, and homes more convenient for our feline friends.

Animals do not love or care for humans. The "sympathy" they show is probably detecting some kind of hormone we likely give off when sad.

Animals likely perceive that as we might die soon so they can eat our decaying bodies.

It is a "Feel good" thing to imagine that animals care for us on any level but they simply do not.

They can definitely sense how people feel. I think maybe it's more of a self preservation thing because they are completely dependant on us for survival. Therefore if something is wrong with us then they can feel threatened. Also they are pack animals and usually they see the people they live with as their pack so if anyone in the pack is unsafe which could be shown by crying and various other behaviours they also feel unsafe.

Yes it's very normal. Cats and dogs, and most animals in fact, are instinctively sensitive. It bothers me that people want aliens to come here, when we haven't even learned how much our fellow earth creatures communicate with us.

I hope you stop crying and feel better soon but until then let your kitty love on you and draw strength from them.
