Do you think school is really important?

My family always tells me that without school I won't make it anywhere in life. But I'm not even really sure WHAT I want to go to school FOR.. I dropped out halfway through my first Sophomore semester and now have a $4k bill to pay off.

I just don't see school worth the loads of money I'm paying to learn stuff I don't even care to know..

So what are your opinions? Please comment and make it clearer!

I find that it severely annoys me, but most people say it's just because I'm black. BS. It sucks yes, but eventually it's for your own good.

  • What they should do in school is during all the years we are there learning a lot of useless shit. We should be able to go see people who are working in many different types of jobs. To let the kids/teens see what there is out there. SO many people have no idea what to do with their lives after high school. I say school is useful for the useful subjects, the basics and giving a social part to it. If you want to be an electrician and you're forced into art class, what the fuck.

You can get great paying jobs if you go to school. You can still earn a good pay without school, but you'll either have to be really lucky or work hard for it.

  • i just hate the way school is run, how it is so strict.

Why would we live so that we spend half our time getting bored and told what to do? It has to be done in a relaxed style where you learn the basics in everything and then pick what you want to do

Anything before university is a waste of time. Often is mandatory and there for we have varying levels of education. Which is a true failure of the educational system. Kids do not get to pick where they live and depending on where you live determines if you have a better education.

Of course your parents could send you away to boarding school but they would miss you for your entire childhood and it cost a lot. After which they send children all with varying degrees of education to universities. Hoping that the previous schools have prepared them.

Yet sadly most of these children even the ones in advanced courses can not make in regular mainstream university classes. So have to take all these prerequisites and its a lot of students. The schools are failing us! So it should not be mandatory. If a school is not working and not doing its job it should not be forced until they can assure all the schools are at the same level.

There is more than one way to gain skills and educate yourself. School is often the easiest way to do that.

School gives you the skills you need to get a well paid job, I know there is a lot you can learn from work experience but most of the time people don't like having to teach someone literally everything from scratch because it takes extra time and effort

haha i used to think college was everything. Now I realize that the majority of the time it is the ultimate/biggest ripoff of eternity.

Only do it if it is something you want to do, just going because you think that is what you are supposed to do is pointless. Figure out what it is you aspire to be/do and then get the education you need.

    • I originally went because my parents were going to kick me out if I didn't. Which seems unfair because my brother was allowed 3 years off before college and my sister 1. So when I found somewhere to move to, i stopped going. Thanks for the input!

  • I had every opportunity to attend college. Scored 2nd highest in my class on sats and my parents offered, all four attempts, to pay for it. It didn't hold my interest. I've been stuck working in a body shop for 25 years now..with no possibility of escape.

    • What I'm saying is that secondary education may not seem essential in your youth, but in my particular case, I sure wish I had a degree to provide more opportunities now. Even skilled labor reaches a pay ceiling eventually, and I suffer from extreme burnout. With a family to support, college is no longer an option.

I'd say take some time and try different jobs, get involved in activities or causes, volunteer, see what you have a real passion for. Maybe you can even get an apprenticeship, many fields offer that, you just have to do the work to find someone willing to take you on. Maybe you're more suited to a trade, not so much an office type job....Trades make good money!! Think mechanic, plumber and so on....they make big bucks and they're always in high demand.

Lots of people don't like school and our parents all ways tell us it is important. I hated school my parents made me go to school. When I was young I was scared of thunder and since I went to school I learned why thunder and lighting occurred. I also now have a job that works on weather. So school helps us either helps us with our fears or helps us figure out what we want to do in life.

i think living's important. for satisfactory living you need money. (at least that's what i think) to get money you need a job. to get a job that pays good enough you need to study. that's it.

Well actually if you asked teenagers if school sucks, YES it does, even I think that too. But, It is really important to us because we need it for our future family and future life. Sometimes it can be fun, sometimes it can be boring. But think about this, without school we will never learn anything, without school we will never meet our friends, and without school we will never meet our first love/crush. And at the end, no matter how much we hate school we will still miss it along with our friends/classmates.

    • College, not high school. College is about learning, not making friends and meeting people to fall in love with. That's the difference between the two. In high school you don't care about learning and focus on everything but it. I didn't mind high school. It was free. We're now talking about money, not the drama.

And my perception is, why should someone pay $50k for 4 years to learn about something that would take less than 1 year of real life experience to learn?

  • I think people should learn the basics like math and english and then they have to choose what they want to do in life and instead of having to go through years of education they can just go to the workplace that they want and get educated on how to do the job there. So basically you would get taught by the people that know how to do the job you want to do instead of being handed a few pieces of paper.
