Do you think the phrase "4 more years!" is hazing?

Hey, I'm a senior in high school, we have our convocation tomorrow(sort of like a pep rally) and anyone who yells "4 more years!" to the freshmen are immediately suspended. It happened to my class, the classes before ours. It was just playful teasing between the grades. When I was a freshman we would laugh about how we have 4 more years of no responsibility!
But this year it was changed because its "bullying and hazing" No one understand why the administration changed it, not teachers or students.

But I was wondering if others felt like the phrase "4 more years!" is hazing?

No, deffinantly not hazing! 57
Yes, yelling "4 more years!" is cruel and is deffinantly hazing! 3

It's not cruel, but it is stupid and immature.

Is this PC gone mad?! So if you say, "4 more years" you are suspended for bullying? So do the freshmen go away and cry for their mommies!?

Are the seniors not telling the truth that they do have 4 more years to do??

I am really confused! Is it any wonder they say that this generation have no resilience?!

I think the admin staff should go and get a life and allow the freshmen to toughen up, and be able to deal with a little banter.

Whatever happened to "Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me!"?

    • I don't know Joybird. The way she explains it makes it seem unreasonable, but. . .

Usually when adults make a rule, there's usually a pretty good reason for it and teenagers tend to overlook that reason, or are not privy to it. So then, how do we really know what's going on here, when all we have is very young woman's explanation of "playful teasing". There could be some incidents left out, not because she's trying to be deceitful, but because she really doesn't have all the facts.

I appreciate what you're saying, though it has also been adults who have pushed this political correctness tooooo far, so that children can't even be scolded or told that the work they submit is rubbish, and they should redo it.

In order to build their self-esteem they are reducing their ability to withstand verbal abuse / teasing / bullying - so that we've ended up with increased suicides and a generation of cry babies in the Western world.

        • Oh, I thought that was all the bad parenting, or the lack of parenting altogether, that was causing that and they poor teachers are just suffering the consequences.

You're right - certainly a combination of both! We have parents who come into schools threatening the teacher if little Johnnie has been told off for not doing his homework!

There's definitely an argument here for sterilisation at birth ;o)

When I was a freshman I remember telling myself the same thing almost everyday. It's not mean at all.

When I was a freshman, half of us were tossed into trash cans. I would have loved to have just been told I had four more years because I really did.

If it is just friendly, it's fine. But because a harsh rule has been made, it can be inferred that either someone complained and didn't find it fun, or whoever makes the rules is just very out of touch.

  • I went to a high school that included grades 8 - 12 and I never experienced any intimidation from the seniors, but I'm female.

It could be different for boys, especially the little guys who haven't had their growth-spurt yet. Having a hulking 17/18 year old hormone-stupid douche-bag remind you that you have 4 more years to be picked on and bullied, would be pretty terrifying.

It could also be that the school experienced an incident or two, where there was in fact some real bullying and it ruined the fun for everyone. To avoid lawsuits and negative press, it's better to have all students to conform to the same rule to protect the weak few.

Did you know that the brain, primarily the pre-frontal cortex - which is responsible for impulse control and decision-making, doesn't fully develop until around the age of 20.

    1) Who ever said hazing is only physical?

    2) Seriously? How old are these students yelling? 17? 18? And they still don't know how to freakin' behave in public? It's somewhat scary that they'll soon be voting and they can't even get through a day without screaming at someone just for a laugh.

Perhaps it's time they grew the freak up hmm?

    3) And lastly... when I first saw the phrase "four more years", before reading the article, I thought it was about politics. That may be another reason why the adults are telling the kids "stop it".

But mainly... it's about life. Sometimes you have to close your mouth even when you don't want to.

    Welcome to the real world.
