Do you think they'll fire me?

I was 2 minutes late to work today because of traffic and it's not a lie. I left the house even earlier than usual but was 2 minutes late because I was in a standstill where NOTHING moved for 15 solid minutes. My coworker who works alongside me was 15 minutes late because of the same traffic but I'm freaking out because I was warned.

Last week, my boss warned me about being late, he said it was the final straw and he'd sack me if I'm late again because I've been about 1-5 minutes late 7 times in the past month. I have another job and it's far away so that's why it made me late but only because I stopped to eat lunch for 5 minutes but I stopped eating lunch so now I haven't been late until today.

Anyway, my boss was on vacation and gets back on monday. I was on time or early 4 out of the 5 days I've worked since he's been gone except today (2 minutes late). I am positive I'll be about 5 minutes early when I see him on Monday so do you think he'll sack me when he sees me?

I honestly left my first job 10 minutes earlier than usual so I would have been very early but instead, the traffic made me and my coworker late.

If he sees me come in 5 minutes early, do you think he'll sack me anyway? He definitely likes me but doesn't love me.

You're just going to have to wait and see

    • I can't, the anticipation is making me scared sh*tless. :/ Would it be silly to go to work an hour early (he is scheduled for an hour before me) and just explain to them what happened and wait to clock in? I guess that would show them I really really care but then that would probably come off as insane, right?

Only downside is I lose an hour at my first job..

If you were only 2 mins late and a co-worker was much later on the same day because of the same traffic problems, maybe you have nothing to worry about?

If it makes you feel better, do as you suggested and see how it goes, unless there's a chance he'll never find out you were that tiny bit late when he was away

Easy to do if you're worried about your job - good luck with whatever you decide to do

  • This is ridiculous. 2 mins late?! I get to my job 10-15 mins late everyday. Who cares? It's just a stupid job.

If I had a boss who was that strict about punctuality, I would have rearranged my schedule.

Leave home earlier and also have alternative routes should traffic on your regular route is bad.

Many major cities have streaming information on television or online so I suggest you hit these up before you leave the house.

I mean, that's not that late, but you should arrive to work early. Regularly.

    Your boss is not normal.
You should try to get him fired.
If not possible, you should quit and get a better job.

personally, 5 to ten minutes late dont matter to me as long as you arent already clocked in. But then again, to be late 7 times in a row regardless of how much time - reflects badly in general. I understand you are late because of your other job, and its a step in the right direction that you decided to leave your other job earlier than usual in order to be on time. However...

First of all, an excuse is an excuse. Secondly, we all gotta eat - otherwise what will our bodies have to keep our energy up. Finally, i still have to fire you because rules are rules. Had this been brought to my attention earlier, id schedule you at a later time so that you wouldn't have to actually be late. Or i wouldnt of have hired you in the first place.

If i was your boss, id say that to you. Especially if i was not already confident about having you working for me. If he just plain dislikes you (like my boss at my job) then fuck it.

Do you call your boss when you are going to be late, or do you just show up late and give him an excuse why you were late? If you just show up late, I would can you on the spot if I were him. Your boss is in charge and has to get work done through laborers. Namely you. If you don't show up your boss has to start replanning and rescheduling the people who don't show up late. Then you show up and he has to re-re-schedule everything. You just make more work for him and he doesn't get paid for that extra work. You made a contract with your company to be at work, on time, everyday. What would you do if they paid you only when they thought it was convenient for them, and then gave you some lame excuse why you didn't get paid as they promised you they would. You would be pissed. You gave them your word you would not be late anymore. So it is your responsibility to do whatever you have to do to honor your word. There are too many people out there who will do your job and be ontime every day. You either keep your word, keep your promise to your boss or quit so he can get someone he can count on.

Sorry if this sounds harsh, but no one said life was fair or easy. Grow up and grow a pair and do what you said you would do.

    • The policy is only call if you'll be 15 minutes or more late so I can't call. I once called and said "I might run a few minutes late" and arrived 3 minutes late and he told me only to call if it's 15 minutes or more. I've never been more than 5 minutes late so I can't call.

Grow up? I have 2 jobs, I work 16 hour days to support myself. I come from an hour drive away from this job. I was only late because I come from far and I stopped to eat lunch because I don't eat breakfast but I stopped eating lunch. If growing up is not eating the whole day until 10 pm when I have diabetes(and no, I didn't get it from too many donuts, I had diabetes since I was 6), then that's what I'm doing now. They closed lanes, I was not aware, I just got my license a year ago, I'm new to driving, sheesh.

The roadwork says it'll be finished in 3 days so I shouldn't be late again. I was in a standstill and there was no way to beat it as even when I went down a different route, the cars all followed there too. I can't fly.
