I think the institution of marriage is pretty excellent. Aside from the fact that there is risk in anything you do (or don't do - like a live a life of loneliness) it is admittedly not for everyone, especially - sorry to say it - big losers. And for some of the few others, it is about personal values.

The typical concerns of those on IIN, most of whom have pubic hairs barely a decade old, are about supposed property rights, duties and obligations. What a huge laugh - immature, lame and not ready for prime time nonsense. Get real: no one wants you nor can imagine a lifetime with huge pains in the ass. Who cares what you have?

The fact is marriage has risks and huge benefits for the normal. But for the foolish, imprudent, and well ... generally stupid ... it is another story. You can't fault marriage itself for the shambles some people make of it because the witless make a mess of most things they do anyway.

I'll have to admit, if I were a man, I would DEFINITELY be more conscious AND cautious of who I marry.

In the real world (not on the internet, but the real world) men are generally expected to put up with more shit from women, and to say "She wasn't this big of a bitch/this adamant on having kids NOW as she was BEFORE we got married" will make you sound like the biggest dick-face on the planet.

Not to mention that men usually get the short end of the stick when it comes to divorce. Poor pitiful woman demands alimony, custody and child support AND makes you look like a douche. Not that there haven't been divorces where the guy probably deserved it for being a genuine douche, but there are divorces like that where the man isn't a douche and I wouldn't want to be known as a douche because some woman decided to cheat or because of a personal and irreconcilable conflict. And thanks to that, I lose my kids and half my paycheck because I have a penis. Awesome.

I am not saying that I wouldn't marry or that I would secure an air-tight pre-nup but I would definitely be a lot more considerate of who I choose as a mate if I were a guy, knowing what is at stake should the marriage fail. My husband has a lot more courage than I might. A woman with a history like mine would raise many red flags for me.

Don't worry, men, women have their fair share of shit to worry about when selecting a potential husband (i.e. will we commit to a life together and then once the baby comes along, he decides that I've become too much of a mess for him with all of the hormones and such and decides to find another young hot tottie, will he cheat, will he drag me through countless legal battles just to get my fair share of child support etc.), but I would say that it is safe to assume that the court is usually on the woman's side. As a man, the courts are against you. Choose wisely.

I can't speak for men, but if I *WERE* a man, I would be more reluctant to marry.

My husband had no issue with it, he's a really easy-going guy, like "Marriage? Well you seem pretty smart and together, cool, let's do it.", and some guys I know are more willing to marry than some girls I know, but I myself would be pretty cautious.

        • I absolutely and totally agree with everything you said. I was looking forward to answering this myself, but there is no need to as it would just be me repeating everything you said.

I can completely understand the motivation women would have to want to be married, but for men, it seems to be a 50/50 shot to me. I know many men are happily married, but I dont define "happiness" as doing what my wife tells me to do, while others comment about how "cute" we are.

I also wana say that there are decent women still out there, they are just VERY few and far between.

Someday I really hope I will. Not for many, many years though - probably not before I'm at least 30 - and hopefully by that time the law will have evened out so men and women are treated equally and I won't have to worry about being treated horrifically unfairly if we ever divorced.

I have a strong natural urge to have a fluffy, perfect, fairytale romance (as a guy, that takes some level of bravery to admit :P). Sadly the world doesn't work like that, so unless the laws have really changed I'd probably like to have some measure of pre-nup just to be safer.

  • Never going to marry. NeuroNeptunian pretty much said everything I had to say.
Far more risky for men to get married than for women.

I don't plan on putting myself in a position where a woman can take everything I worked hard for, while she done barely anything to get the things she is trying to take from me, then still be considered the asshole. I'm not going to let a woman do that to me by society allowing women to do such things to men.

Sorry to say, but I just don't trust women enough now.

I love how you assume the woman in your hypothetical relationship is basically a gold-digger housewife with no income. Don't you get to pick who you get involved with? She might make more money than you do. Ha ha!

          Comment Hidden ( show )
            -
          • I make that assumption because females are more likely to have a third party giving them money than males are, such as benefits.
Also, a female gold-digger has more of a chance of getting everything their partner worked for more than a male gold-digger.

Again... you get to choose who you want to be in a relationship with. So don't settle on a woman who will be financially dependent on you. Problem solved. It's not like this is a lottery!

        • NeuroNeptunian

Here in the US, any decent lawyer can give you a pre-nup as air-tight as an old Volkswagon Bug. Divorce here is like... ehh, whatever. It became a lucrative business afterwards.

          Comment Hidden ( show )
            -
          • Most if not all pre-nups have a very limited statute of limitations on them. They dont last in perpetuity, most likely because courts now that the liklihood of a divorce happening is close to 50% and if a pre-nups exists lawyers wont be needed and the legal system wont generate money for itself.

The majority, I would say 80%, expire after 10 years. And I am not quite sure about the possibility of setting one up longer then that.

            Comment Hidden ( show )
        • I understand your point of view but you're assuming that all women are money-minded.

          Comment Hidden ( show )
            -
          • No, I don't think all women are. A lot of women can and will, and I believe it is much more likely to find a woman that wil take everything I worked for after a divorce rather than find a woman that wouldn't.
The point is that they "can" do it, and since they "can" so many have, and I am not going to risk it.

Sorry, but if women wanted me to think differently, they should of acted differently.

I blame society and women for this. Women can get away with it, and so they do it, but if society decided for that to stop, women couldn't do it.

              Exactly.

When my husband gets his CPA and starts making an ACCOUNTANT'S salary, I am going to have him buy me a house and a brand new car. Once I have some good stocks and bonds bought off of his money, I am going to take his ass to court, take all he has got, and fucking leave him in the road with a sign that says "Will do accounting for toilet paper" because by the time I am through with this bitch, he won't have two pennies to wipe his ass with, let alone, rub together.

              I'm super cereal.

They do sometimes fail yes. I don't know. Maybe because they are still relatively new in the UK. And not many people actually use them either.
Many people don't even marry now anyway. Divorce rates are quite high. Can see why some people won't even bother risking it.

It seems like a good idea at first, but in this day and age most of the couples have sex before marriage, women don't cook or clean like in the past, so basically all you're getting is a roommate and if this won't work out you lose your house, car and pay alimony every month, lets be honest, when it comes to divorce the man gets the shaft.

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • I really would still like to comment even though Neuro basically hit the nail directly on the head.

Being a man, and being a man with assets that probably wouldnt be protected entering into a marriage I am VERY reluctant to get married. Thats not to say I am totally against marriage, but I think for many people marriage today isnt what it was 40-50 yrs ago. There is no stigma on divorce, if you get upset with your spouse, just call a lawyer, there is probably one around the corner from you. And because of this there is no incentive to work through problems that arise in the relationship/marriage, the mentality today seems to be if it aint working then cut your losses and move on. Which isnt what marriage is supposed to be at all.

Its also difficult in being a man when "cutting losses" because on average the man makes out worse in a divorce ruling then a woman does. And that is always compounded more when children are involved.

At the very least men should be immensely cautious about who they marry, and if bringing any sort of assets into it should get some sort of pre-nup just for their own protection.
