A friend of mine, well exfriend now, feels that because he's successfully lied some terrific lies, that makes him a good actor. This is what he bases his reason for being an actor...and what he bases as an example that he's a good actor at that.
Is this normal?

Acting is not a lie. Acting is to pretend. When a child pretends to be a fire man is he lying? No he is pretending. when a child tells you he did do his homework knowing he didn't that is a lie. Pretending is for fun and it is not something that hurts people. A lie is damaging. So I guess in your eyes all children are liars. Lying has the motive to deceive and pretending has a purpose to amuse. Most of us do not use our real name as our users. so are you going to call us lairs?
I'd say it's more the other way around - good actors are usually good liars. (Not always, though! They're not the same thing.) It's not impossible that your friend is a good actor, but if his ability to lie is his only evidence of that, I would have to guess not likely.
Ha ha, I've wondered this! Then I thought, all actors can't be nasty little liars... right? It's not that balck and white, but it's an interesting topic.
If anything being a good actor might make you a good liar, but not the other way around.
I imagine acting and lying have some sense of commonality with each other much as an artist and an architect have shared talent; but being good at one doesn't make you good at the other.
