Haha, yeah Google could've done it but I'm here. Now I feel like I own all the knowledge about Brazil! MWAHAHAH >:|
Isn’t there a place called Caatiga that’s classified as semiarid since it’s under an area of high pressure?
I think you are talking about Lençóis Maranhenses National Park. It isn't really a desert since it gets 47 inches of rain a year, but it looks like a desert with how much sand covers the area.
Yeah, Lençóis Maranhenses are not really a desert. In fact, the word 'lençóis' in Portuguese is plural for water table or groundwater.
I'm not from Brazil, nor have I ever visited, but according to Google Earth, the north-eastern "desert" area is comprised of two mountain ranges (Serra do Piaui and Serra do Ibiapaba) and the Caatinga vegetation.
So, using all of the knowledge of Brazil that I have accrued during my lifetime (which admittedly could be written on the back of a postage stamp with a board marker) I would deduce that there is no real desert in the north-east of Brazil.
I'm also too lazy to search or to read the comments. So...is there a desert in Brazil or not?
First of all, you have to consider Brazil is one of the largest countries in the world. Therefore I obviously don't know everything about it. As far as I know there have never been any deserts per se here. However, because of prolonged intense drought, some states in the northeastern regions have suffered a desertification process and are extremely arid. The southern regions and states are considerably richer than those areas so that also plays a part in how bad the situation is up north.
Some have already mentioned the caatinga but that is actually what the vegetation is called in the region of the Sertão Nordestino - which is what you asked. It's a common setting in several renowned literary works by Brazilian authors, some of which I highly recommend.
Not Brazilian but try reading this:
