Does something have to be survival essential in order to be a need?

Asking on behalf of Hookerfall again. This time I'm not asking specifically about sex, but more in general. How many here agree with Hookerfalls whole definition of what defines a need?

Yes, only things you need to survive are needs 1
No, but it must at least be essential to optimal physical health 0
No, there is certainly something like a psychological need 4

  • Peronally a need is something you can't live without and sex is not that because not having it does not kill you.
However there are indeed psychological needs. For some people sex is very important and that is valid wether you feel the same way or not, it's just a much more intimate form of connecting physically like cuddling and most people would agree that not being allowed to cuddle your partner or anyone ever would be kind of depressing. That doesn't mean some people have no need for any physical intimacy though, but those who do might feel like something big is missing without it. It's just basic empathy of peoples different feelings and needs.
