Does the youth in america respect the older generations?

Older people have experienced the nuts and bolts of life, and have seen many dreams come and go, and know what to do in most situatuions yet everyone seems to respect youth. Why? Younger people are just trying to figure things out, yet they seem to get the jobs, the chances and the money.

The youth may be the future eventually, but people are living much longer now, and older people also affect the future.

Choose yes, if you think that worshipping youth is normal and helpful, vote no if you do not think it is helpful to worship youth in the American culture.

One value that I just can't agree with our country losing, even though I don't disagree with the logic, is respect for our elders. I don't care much for this "I need a reason to respect someone" mentality because I see it as petty. Everyone is entitled to at least a basic level of respect. Now whether or not I like them, admire them and value their opinion is a different matter. I don't need to like someone to treat someone with at least a basic amount of respect and dignity.

However, I have trouble valuing the opinions and expertise of baby boomers relative to their parents. I think one thing that is wrong with my generation (I am 22) is that the baby boomers resented the strictness of their parents and in fighting to overturn discrimination, inadvertently made certain necessary social values (such as moderation, respect for self and others and respect for authority) socially unacceptable. Yes, people should be free to express themselves, but is it really ok if they are pushing it to a point at which they try to make others feel inadequate? Yes, people should be able to be able to express themselves sexually without feeling restricted by religion, but does that mean that all inhibitions should be thrown to the wind? Should we really lose our sense of community just because we don't agree with everything our community and leaders say and do?

Surely, change is good, but it's always wise to remember the values that brought us here in the first place rather than completely abandon them.

Sadly, the older generation (mine) has let you young people down horribly. We are leaving you a polluted, dying world without enough jobs, with broken governments and an economy that is totally based on greed.
But that does not mean that the individual older person has nothing to offer you. We have experienced many of the that are troubling you and have muddled through. A few of us have actually learned some things in our lives that could save you going through the same difficulties, but a very few of you will listen to your elders, so you will go through may of the same unpleasant things.
On IIN, it seems to be about an even split. Half of you just blow me off when I try to give constructive help, (which is certainly not every post).
But in the end, it's your choice; learn from those who have been there and done that all before, possibly saving yourselves some hardships and pain, or find your own way and perhaps look back one day and wish you had listened to some of those "old fools". I certainly wish I had listened to one or two of those "old fools", myself.

I'm getting this feeling that most don't, but what generation in American history ever really respected the older generation? It's like a cycle really. That's how things change in this country.

Just look at the Baby Boomer generation and then the subsequent generation. The youth of the 60's mostly rebelled against the ideals of their parents and look what happened to society, and changes in general in America.

Another aspect of this that I find funny is when people say things such as ''these kids don't respect their elders, or their parents. What is this world coming to?'' as if the newest generation of youth is going to destroy the country. I feel as though they need to look back at history and see that it's really a cycle. Every new generation always seems to be ''the worst we've ever had.'' Silly in my opinion. But that doesn't mean this generation we have now has problems, but it doesn't mean it's the end all, be all.

It's a weird one, isn't it, when the only people who can lead a country are very ancient people of 35 or more? Being absolutely fair, while experience brings ability, is it really right to say that a six year old shouldn't run the country if they're equivalent to the person chosen to do so at a later age?

I'm not being facetious. I believe some world leaders have the intellectual capacity of a four year old. Therefore it's better that we are ruled by someone aged six.

When you posted this I was waiting for the bus, which was way off schedule and presumably being driven by an old vagina... though not an actual one, only metaphorically.

Well, I respect my elders. But, if they deliberately are rude to me, racist, prejudiced cause I'm young, get angry at me for no reason or say mean and judgmental things, then, no I will not respect them. If they want respect they have to earn it just like everyone else. It's only fair. Age really means nothing for experience. You could be a hard worker, deal with drugs, have tons of kids, family issues, divorce, marriage, rape, etc.. and be young or old.

No they are not. All of youth today has become disrespectful , self entitled, trouble-making little cunts. With no sense of responsibility, no consideration for other people, and not enough logic in their heads to stop themselves from getting murdered or killed in some accident or walking into that white van that man stated he had cookies in.

Despite the fact they have been taught, told, educated otherwise. They refuse to obey traffic rules, do not respect each other and will do anything to get famous. Even if that mean getting raped in the rear and stuck in prison for a few years. Since the phrase YOLO is the new term that is sweeping the youth today......

I certainly hope not. The older generations are the ones murdering people based on their phone records.

Eh, I dont see the point in living when you piss and shit yourself all day, cant smell cant hear cant taste cant see everything hurts no one wants to be around you your friends and loved ones are mostly dead. Trapped alone in a prison-like retirement home. Why keep going? Is it really that enjoyable to be old, to just sit with your own thoughts replaying the parts of your life that were actually enjoyable, every day until you finally pass? Fuuuuuck that. The only population control I support is to not have so many babies one per couple at most until our population evens out. That's just the responsible thing to do in my opinion. If we had half as many people on earth as we do now we'd have fucking jetpacks by now.

        • I thought you were insinuating on something else more sinister like "soft systematic" population control and involuntary sterilizations. I seriously hate reading comments by people with those extreme ideals and I strongly disagree with that type of position.

Nah, cutting nutsacks forcefully is impossible there'd be a government overthrow within the week if we ever did that lol.

I think they should make it insentive based, by giving all the non parent adults the tax breaks, not the parents. If EBT and other govt assisstance programs based their highest support to parents with just 1 child and decreased the benefits as the number of children increased, as fucked up as it may sound, if you did it right (like allowing families already on these tax breaks and govt assisstance to keep their benefits), the population of people living below the poverty level would decrease dramatically.

I know lots of people on govt assisstance, there are people that practically make a career out of it by making babies with the right people at the right time for the best benefits. You wouldnt believe how many people have avoided having a job for most of their life that way.

            • I can't understand why anyone would want to be on benefits and make a career out of it. Those people abusing the system make all the honest people who actually need government assistance, like veterans and people with various disabilities look extremely bad. The abusers make it harder for the people who actually need them get them, and once they do finally get them, they are automatically stigmatized by society as worthless leeches, which is far from the truth.
