Dreaded time of the year: the office party

Do you always go to yours? How rude is not to go in your opinion? Is it better to not go or just go, get drunk for free and become memorable for the wrong reasons? Or just go, not drink and endure a couple of hours of horrible people's company?

I don't want to work on a Saturday night!

What's the best solution?

Go, it's rude not to. 10
Don't go. Who cares? 22

I hate these events with a passion. And yes, I completely agree, any work social event is just work in your own free time. Fucking nightmare stuff.

However, you are better off going. You only have to stay two or three hours and it is good for your career. You look like a miserable bastard if you don't go and that label is more important than you might think, it seeps into everything.

The only exception would be if you have a really good excuse - but it has to be SO GOOD. like, sister's wedding, you just had a baby, husband booked a surprise holiday. Those kind of excuses. Having a cold or saying there's another party you were invited to won't cut it.

My usual tact is to go, have only one or two drinks very slowly so I don't get drunk at all but look like I'm joining in, and then I always have an important family event early the next day so I can't stay late.

I totally understand if you swerve it, but do so at your own peril OP.

I have to go to mine, cause I'm the boss... So I must attend two Christmas office parties... One at my regular job as the manager of a car dealership and the other as the boss of my cleaning company.

Christmas office parties feel a bit forced and are always boring. Obviously I can't get drunk, cause it's a bad example for everyone and I have to be sober enough, cause at the end of said party, I have to pay the bill.

And then there is the very stiff and boring speech every boss must do for a Christmas party and talk about synergy, cooperation, task focusing and my favorite... green energy... Even if both businesses I manage have nothing to do with energy production... but hey green A+++ printers I guess?!

Yesterday was my car dealership party, there were only two people I want to hang out with. One is an intern who is a car guy like me and the other is one of our mechanics - a 53 year old Polish woman. Another Mercedes fan who can help me with my cars, should a problem arise. My secretary is boring and the rest of the mechanics are Russians, who's prime goal in life is to be always drunk...

For my company's party, tonight, I enjoy the company of my secretary only, cause she's a good friend of mine. I've known her for 6 years. Everyone else that does actual cleaning has nothing interesting to say, except for the boldest of 'em who ask for a raise they know they won't get...

Anyway, my advice, go so you don't have to work Saturday, or whatever. Plus a free meal and free drinks are always welcomed.

PS: Another 20 minutes and no more job parties. Me, my girlfriend and said secretary catch a taxi to a good friend of mine's birthday. Finally I can have a few good drinks myself.

"the rest of the mechanics are Russians, who's prime goal in life is to be always drunk"

      LOL

Not sure I'd want them working on my car, though.

Dude I sell Peugeots... Doubt you'd want to buy one of our cars in the first place XD

I certainly wouldn't... Unless it's an old 205 GTI, those things are awesome...

Go, stay sober, take lots of covert pictures, and profit in the New Year.

That's always been my approach as well.

Far too many people feel they have to go along with the herd all the time because they're terrified others will think they're weird.

      Fuck 'em.

Life's too short to do stuff you don't want to do just because others believe you should.

Make an appearance, have a drink, but don't get drunk. If there is a raffle, win the tv. If you want to party with your coworkers, do so elsewhere.

In my former job I used to go and had much fun until I began to be fed up about the job, the colleagues and the boss. I stopped going saying that I did not want to have fun with people I don't get along and that there was nothing to celebrate with them.

In my new job we do not have end of year parties. :(

I absolutely love them, I had mine last night and it was the best night of the year! No one in my office is bitchy or anything though, plus work events are the only time I do get out really.

They frown on me going nude so I stay home. Jk. I don't work for an office but my red swingline stapler is ever present.

Where I work, if you don't show up you become the subject of jokes and gossip.

Where's so and so? Oh, he has to get up early to work out, he says. You know he cooks a roast beef every morning? Ha ha. Maybe that's why he was out so long for surgery. What, you mean the colon cancer? Is that what it was? Yeah, you don't know he wears a colostomy bag? Didn't know. I guess that's why he spends so much time in the bathroom. Ha ha, yeah I thought he was in there applying his makeup.

  • Cant speak about christmas office parties, but for my summer job we had a couple office parties. And even though I’d rather of gone home, it was important to stay. Made you look a little more devoted to your job than those who flaked. Not to mention, just a tad bit more dependable and familiar to the boss.
In short, go, even if it’s just for two or three hours.

Free food at least. The only suck part is perhaps when they give a speech about how great the company is doing and it is all because of the sweat off our backs.
