Even if there was no god, would religion still be necessary?

Let's assume that there is NO God and NO divine punishment/reward after death. That of course wouldn't make it OK to suddenly act criminally. Yet, SOME people would, who would otherwise be kept in check by their fear of God and divine punishment. So, even if there was no God, would religion still be necessary?

  • There are a lot of people who don't believe in god, and they're not criminals.
Not being religious, or not believing in judgement after death doesn't make you have less morals or common sense.
And if the only thing that stops you from committing mass murder is the fear of god, then you're not a good person, you're just an obedient hypocritical slave. A lot of mindless christian sheep fall into that category.

I agree 100%, but wouldn't religion be useful to keep these assholes in check?

sure. if by in check you mean batshit insane.

just look throughout history, Salem witch trails, Spanish inquisition, the crusades.

the best and most self-righteous murderers are all religious.

    • I agree with this.
Whether or not there is a God does not effect how I choose to live.
Honestly it makes no difference to me what the answers to the universe are, if there even is any.

Should the populous be brainwashed? NO!

I would have liked your question better if it were "Even there was a God would religion be necessary?". That's how I first misread it. In either case, I don't think religion is necessary.

"Should the populous be brainwashed? NO!"

I agree. Still, wouldn't religion be useful to keep assholes in check who without faith in a deity would behave extremely violent?

No, just tommythecat. Often religion is used as an excuse to behave extremely violently. If people want to do something wrong they will find a way to justify it.

  • If there is there is NO God and NO divine punishment/reward after death then it would be ok to act criminally. It would mean one could simply set there own rules, why exactly is society worth anything to a single person as a given? I don't care about those I don't know, and no god means I can do whatever I can get away with.

It would be insane to follow the rules if there really were none. I don't know what comes after death, nobody can prove it so I don't act out too much. Were it ever proven that there is no god for certain, I would do far worse things. For what reason would there be not to do so?

If it was proven there was no God and you "did far worse things", you'd probably spend the rest of the only life you've got in a prison cell. Just because there is no God, does not mean actions stop having consequences.

      • Compassion is always optional, and the reaction of others is just a dead moment.

So, the possibility of there being a God is the only thing that keeps you from being a total fucking asshole, huh? Lovely...

Although I DO have to admit quite a large part of me is exactly the same way. It's pretty tempting to do certain stuff, if you know there won't be any repercussions whatsoever.

Still, the part of me that says I shouldn't do that (even though if I would get away with it) has got the better of me.

You're right that one could set their own rules if a God for sure didn't exist, but I personally wouldn't set evil rules. I don't think anyone should.

          • It just really gets to you, it changes you, you go through life thinking it's just you that's the bad guy. Then you step back one day and look at those you've known and realise that they're all terrible human beings in their own unique ways.

Everyone has their dark side. Some people seem to have a darker dark side than others though. Try not to let them get to you.

it is not necessary now and it would not be then its just a bunch of books that people translated into their own believes/ideals every one has there own believe but they find something they don't like and immediately start bitching and ranting off on hoe GOD doesn't like that it the devils work ect.

I voted other because I think religion will be replaced by Order. New World Order. And in that event there is law and convictions

It's not a necessity. Some people want to believe in something because that makes them feel better, or stronger. Some others do it because of fear, some others simply don't care. It's a personal issue. People should be free to choose their beliefs as long as they are not forcing others to do the same.

Well if there was no god, I'm pretty sure people would something else to flock around and worship. But generally religion gives people hope that their life has purpose as well as morals to live by. But at the same time.....a lot of people have been killed in the name of religion and it has created a division with many cultures........I would like to think religion serves a purpose considering I was raised in one.

Its not religion that is nesscary. Its some kind of rules and order that are needed since some people are just fucking idiots and will do bad things for the bloody hell of it.
