Extra overly religious mom?

My mother is very super mega ultra extra overly religious. Whenever she hears or reads the words 'demon', 'devil', 'Satan', 'dragon', she freaks out and gives me a long and irritating lecture. For example: I found a nice song titled 'Demons'. As always, I ask permission from her. She answered 'no' and then gave me another very long lecture. I respect my mom and I never do something she forbids me. I tried to reason with her but she gets angry and repeats the lecture all over again. And she doesn't like Judaism simply because it's 'not Christian'. Is this even close to normal?

Oh Gawd no, that's not normal!

*listens to Black Sabbath to relax and make flashbacks of growing up in the Bible belt go away*

I'm going to say it IS normal.
Everyone is entitled to their beliefs, and if it comes off as oppressing, so be it.
However, you do not need to have the same beliefs. I suggest you confront her and tell her that you do not have such a strong and strict faith as hers. Only when she does not allow you to believe anything else would I consider it abnormal/unjustified.

It is somewhat normal. At the same time it is somewhat dangerous. Like your mom, my friend was over religious. A spammer, who claimed to be Christian, told her that she has an evil spirit inside her, and only he could help her. We just ignored him and walked away.
In about two weeks I saw her crying in the washroom. She said that guy helped her by telling her some myths from the bible, and one of them was to kill her younger (baby) sibling. It is obvious that Mr. Dickhead had made a fake bible, but my friend sort of locked her sister in the closet unsure of what to do. I somehow convinced her that she was doing something wrong, and take out her baby sister out of the closet. Fortunately, we haven't come across that bitch yet. Maybe I would give him a good pounding if we did.

I dunno but I know something similar, my bestfriend's mother freaks out when she saw my profile picture on facebook, me cosplaying having red eyes. She said it's evil doing, demon portrayer.

Goodness! She reminds me of some of my relatives. You can either go behind her back and do what you want or, you can avoid these things all together. :/

it is normal, i mean its her religion..but for her to force you into your own beliefs if wrong; everyone is entitled to their own beliefs and views so i think you should do what you want, but reason with her.

This is counter-productive on her part because as an adult when you're on your own, you sure as hell aren't going to have anything to do with that bullshit of your own free will.

  • You sound like one of my coworkers. Her dad believes he is chosen by God and Jesus to carry out their work on earth *rolls eyes* anyway, I do not think it is normal. At least not where I am from.

I heard a saying once, the strictest parents make the sneakiest kids.

Of course it's NORMAL, but it's pretty goddamn shitty to have an overly religious parent. It's mostly a third world immigrant problem though.

It could be in any family, not just an immigrant's family. I know you said "mostly", but I still think that's the tiniest bit prejudiced. Either way, it doesn't really matter. Sorry if I came off a little strong

You can come off strong if you want. I just feel like pushing my politics a lot.
