Extremely infuriated by people who think all asians are chinese

I am Chinese, and I really get irritated by people when they start acting like all Asians are Chinese. Now I have nothing against any other Asian ethnicities, but what I mean is that often when other Asians do things, the comments get directed towards the Chinese. Often, I see a lot of people using Chinese stereotypes to make fun of other Asian countries. For example, if you see people trying to make fun of any Asians they say stuff like "ching chong", when only some Chinese dialects even vaguely sound like that (fact is Japanese can't even pronounce it). This especially irritates me when I see people using terms such as "chink" to insult other Asians like Japanese and Koreans, even when the Chinese do not do it. I've even seen someone say after seeing some people do something bad in Japan say that he would like to go to China and kill a bunch of people there. But the worst I have seen was someone essentially saying "You can't judge all Americans because I'm American and I know a lot of nice Americans but I know all Koreans are bad because of what China does and therefore you have no brain for not bashing Koreans". I see people trying to defend that by saying stuff like how it's fine to call all Asians Chinese because they all eat rice and use Chinese characters - so it's okay to say all whites eat cheese and use derived Greek alphabets and therefore they're all Greeks?

Anyways, you get the point. Is it normal to get irritated by this?

P.S. I have nothing against any ethnic group (including the ones I mentioned) whatsoever.

It is normal but no where near exclusive to Chinese or Asian peoples.

The slur I hear the most is that all Americans are fat, lazy rednecks. You try to say that it's not true and they throw obesity statistics and videos of George Bush at you. I'm southern and most of us don't talk like George Bush. The US is huge and each area vastly different from many others.

We all deal with it to some degree. As thegypsysailor said, the closed off culture of Asian countries is partially to blame.

Does it matter? People that say such inane bullshit won't contribute much toward society and are thus unimportant. Well, to you at least.

Your insistence that slurs should not be misused is not conducive to a unified global identity. Instead it promotes that there are boundaries and that they should be defened.

I hate it when my mom calls Japanese Anime "Chineese cartoons" she knows better! And I understand you completely. All races have their own unique culture and should be admired and humored as such.

  • Don't worry buddy, I'm not even asian and I feel the same way you do. I'm not sure why everyone refers to all asians as chinese, perhaps its the first asian ethnicity that pops into their heads but towards an asian individual I could understand why it would be offensive. I am white and I live in South Africa, and quite frankly I'm sick and tired of every uneducated moron from America or the UK or wherever else (not saying all americans and brittish are uneducated) assuming all South Africans are black. Yes, two 3rds of the country is non white, but for christ sake, we have a lot of whites, indians, coloureds, and even asians here! Why is everybody in South Africa all of a sudden black? This annoys the hell out of me. What's worse is when I ask someone if they like sushi, and they tell me something like "no, I only like other chinese food like sweet and sour pork and stuff" Really?! Sushi is Chinese now? Since when. Also, when people make a joke towards the Japanese community about them eating cats or some shit. Not even all Chinese people do that! I've seen on the news that it has happened before in China, and now everyone assumes every single asian in the world eats cats. Its ridiculous.

I've always wondered if people of Asian nationalities get offended when referred to as Asian, because we can't tell what country they're from.

I've slept with maybe 10-15 Asian girls and I still can't tell the difference.

Unfortunately, in the western world race is defined by physical characteristics alone and many confuse this with ethnicity, culture and even nationality, purely because it makes people readily identifiable and easier to apply stereotypes to.

If the assholes are so dull they have to rely on racial slurs to insult people, they aren't worth listening to, anyway.

Yeah, it's normal to get pissed off about it.

When a society is closed and unfriendly to the rest of the world for a couple of generations, then it is quite normal for there to be grave misconceptions about it's people.
Instead of ranting on about people's ignorance of Asians and the Chinese, why don't you make a bit of effort to illuminate them about the inaccuracies and misconceptions that are normal from any closed or secret society.
The shame is on the Chinese, not the rest of the world, in this case.

How is China a closed society? Maybe a little, but nothing compared to North Korea.

You aren't very well informed aren't you? You really might want to a little research before you show your ignorance with such a silly statement.

Let me rephrase that; yes, China is a closed society but nothing compared to North Korea. At least people can travel there and understand their culture and get to know their people. You'll find it next to impossible to enter North Korea, and the same for the citizens leaving. China may be "communist" (although really just a capitalist society with a closed government) but North Korea is a totalitarian, extremely secretive, violent, cult of personality country that seems to violate every human right you can think of. People should know enough about China to not be completely ignorant as to confuse it with other countries or cultures.

NK is definitely much more tightly controlled than China, but let me assure you that you cannot just wander around China and "meet the people". My daughter went to visit a friend there for several weeks this year and it was so restrictive that she had to be exactly where her itinerary said she was supposed to be at all times. She was not allowed to talk to the common folk (not that any of them could speak English) and could only visit or eat at "approved for foreigners" establishments. To me that is an extremely closed and hostile society which does not lead to open communication and understanding between it's people and visitors.
I have been trying for many years to get a cruising permit to visit China, but the only way I can visit is if I go from one approved marina to another, not anchoring at any small bays, visiting the villages or towns, which just is not how I normally experience a country.

I didn't realize it was that restrictive. I guess my Chinese friends lied to me :(
