Fork and knife etiquette

I eat with my fork in my right hand and knife in the left, so when I set a table I automatically set it like this. I've always been pulled up on it, people telling me that I have it the wrong way round. So I'm curious to see how many people eat in the same manner as I?

I eat with fork in right hand, knife in left 28
I eat with fork in left hand, knife in the right 32
fork in left hand, knife in right to cut then transfer fork to right 13
I use chopsticks 2

      [et-i-kit, -ket]

Sorry I wasn't raised in some upper class utopia where things like silverware placement, or usage mattered.

I eat the things that that are convenient to eat with a fork... with a fork

I eat things that are convenient to eat with a spoon... with a spoon.

If I eat things that are convenient to eat with my hands... I'll use those.

        ME Caveman!

Etiquette sounds like a word you pulled right out of the 50's where this kind of shit actually mattered in simpler times.

        • I realise my comment was a bit rude, apologies for that. For the purpose of what I was trying to ask etiquette was the word that fit at the time. Don't read too much regarding social standards into it. In hindsight I should've titled it fork and knife settings. Meh

Well in that case, I find the answers to your poll interesting, seeing as how the top answer is fork in the left hand, while the majority of people are right handed (me being left) and I eat with my fork in the left.

Maybe it's one of those things, how most everybody uses their computer mouse in their right hand.

I am right-handed. I eat with my fork in my left had (duh - because I'm right handed). And, I use the knife with my right hand (duh - because I'm right handed and I handle both of these better with my dominant hand). I was taught to set the table the traditional way, and as such, I am one of those people who switch. In the end, I don't think it much matters, as long as you don't embarrass yourself or poke someone in the eye with either.

Using the same hand is pretty much strictly an American style.

I am right handed. Use fork in right hand, but seem to be in minority here.

I haven't set a table in ages. I forget where they go and I don't give a fudge either.

I'm left-handed; I use the knife in my right hand to press straight down, then tear the piece away with the fork. 99% sure that's not what they teach in etiquette school.

I'm from Wyoming, so I pretty much put silverware on the table in whatever configuration looks pretty to me and say, "It's there, use it if you want."
However, that does not make me an uncultured hick. The correct silverware layout is the fork on the left, spoon on the outside right, and knife on the inside right. Napkin goes under knife and spoon or on the plate. When eating, cut food up one bite at a time with your knife in your right hand and fork in left, then set down the knife, transfer fork to right hand, eat your bite, and repeat as needed until food is consumed.
However, all of that is bullshit and a pain in the ass, so I usually just make food you can eat with your hands. Like grilled cheese or pizza. Or else I use the side of my fork as a knife because I don't want to deal with a second utensil.
I only really use 'proper' manners when I'm in a restaurant or on holidays or at someone else's house. Even then no one really seems to notice.

i prefer to eat anything bare handed anything that can't be eaten with my hands is either too spicy to want to get on your hands or should be eaten with a spoon.

I use main utensils with my right hand because I am right handed. If I use a secondary object, like a kinke, than I'll use my left hand.

Fork left and knife right. How is food "transferred" between utensils and to your mouth varies on where you are from.

Fork left, knife right. I'm right handed. One of my best friends is left handed, she uses them the other way around. My step mother is left handed, she uses them the same as I do.

The 'correct' way for setting a table is fork left, knife right, but if you choose to use it the other way, then set it like that for yourself. Simples.
