“Silly mothers with medical reasons that require them to rely on formula either entirely or partially to feed their child, if there’s a formula shortage, simply breastfeed like nature (which is always entirely perfect) intended !”

“Silly diabetics, if there’s an insulin shortage, simply make your own like nature intended !”

Formula has always been outrageously expensive. Do you lot actually think that mothers that use/used formula are just “lazy” ? You think people have been spending insane amounts of money for convenience ?

Do you think mothers back in the day used to have to settle with creating make-shift “formula”, use alternatives they know were inferior but literally had no other choice, or paid INSANE amounts of money for wet nurses, just for funsies?

During famines it was common for mothers to substitute corn meal, oatmeal mash, animals milk, and other concoctions, to soothe infants. This was not a choice, this was a dire necessity. What did we do before formula ? Infants died.
Infants and newborns need to be fed every 2-4 hours. That is a shit ton of milk to keep up, and many mothers simply can not fill the quota.

We are a horrible species, pregnancy is dangerous, birthing is dangerous, nursing is not perfect. Some mothers produce milk that isn’t “up to par” in terms of quality, some mothers produce enough milk but are exhausted or suffer a blocked milk duct or other medical issue, rawness, etc. Even with my livestock there is a necessity for human intervention.

Some mothers are blessed (I thank god that my wife is) to be able to breastfeed, and pump enough to allow husbands or outside help to pick up a feed shift to give mothers a (holy fucking shit) much needed break.

Sincerely, someone with a 4 week old, who spent a lot of time speaking with fertility experts, read too many baby books, and actually LISTENS to women talk about their experiences as mothers.

OH AND not to mention how much of a lifesaver formula is for working mothers, mothers of twins/triplets, mothers with other young children to attend to, orphans, single fathers, this site is going to turn me into the unabomber

In addition to everything written here, there are regularly instances of fathers being the sole parent after the mother dies at birth. These individuals would obviously need access to baby formula as well.

It's a sad to see so many people just say "Duh. They just breast feed." when there's a variety of scenarios where that is simply not possible. (Or not enough.)

I want to believe it is just innocent ignorance from people who have never had to think about such a scenario before, but even the slightest hint of empathetic thought should be enough for people to understand that a formula shortage is an absolutely horrible situation.

          It's actually their fault.

I work in retail and I've seen a few women cry over the fact that they can't feed their babies. They would tell me things like how they felt like they were failures because they stopped producing milk or they simply couldn't produce at all. It's really sad seeing them like that. They were probably ridiculed a lot by snobs who have no issues producing milk.

THANK YOU for saying what you're saying.

I’m sure it’s horrifying. It isn’t like there being a shortage of apples so you buy oranges, people are going to have to travel and spend devastating amounts of money to get what they need.
Babies are expensive enough, and new parents definitely don’t have all that free time to go on a hunt for formula and waste up all that gas money.

It’s just bad all around, I really hope relief is coming soon for Americans, and measures are taken so this never happens again

It's almost like theres a biological answer to this. Darn if only we mammals could create a substance to sustain our children. That would be a benchmark on what makes a mammal a mammal.

In all seriousness this is why the fda shouldnt have a social cudgel. The Michigan plant did voluntarily close down. But that was after the FDA told people not to buy from said plant. Because in some areas (that had no contact with the product) it contained a bacteria that was linked to a couple dead babies.

I do think that the author of the post might be asking about women who can't rely on breast milk for one reason or another. Even single fathers would need formula. Kholat's answer is actually a really great one for the sake of that.

Although you are correct that there's a simple answer for many women.

How can they feed the baby if the women are all working? This is part of a big issue in society now, women hand their babies off to someone else to raise so they can go to work.

The wages have dropped so much they have to work and its encouraged through pop culture to be a strong independent working woman. Its the fall of America.
