Friend starting new social media accounts all the time

For a while my internet friend has started tons of new instagram and facebook accounts. This is since he moved to Russia 2 and a half years ago that this has been going on. Everytime I ask him why he's on a new account again after he's added me from yet another account he goes "my phone got stolen" which makes no sense because why start a new account for that reason??Something is off but I don't know what. It doesn't even make sense to get your phone stolen every other week.
Does it generally mean anything in particular if someone has tons of different accounts? I would guess he's catfishing people if it weren't for the fact that he uses variations of his own name on every account and has photos of himself on the accounts he actually uploads to, not to mention he adds me from most (but not all) of them. You can have various accounts for different purposes but he puts the same type of random content on all of them. I just now counted to 6 different accounts of his on instagram with either no content or the same content. I would think some of the accounts are fake with people stealing his photos and DMing his followers but he sends me voice recordings from time to time and its him. There wouldnt even be any point for so many people to try to steal his information of all people.

    I have a friend who does this with Facebook, but deletes the previous one every time. She has said that for her, it's a "fresh start". I think her old accounts had statuses and photos from times in her life she wanted to leave in the past, and it was probably easier to just create a new account.

    I knew someone else whom I suspect was just not very tech savvy and got locked out of his accounts, so created a new one every time. He probably has a good 7-ish Facebook accounts.

    In your friend's case, it's hard to say what his reasoning is, but I agree it seems odd and that it seems unlikely his phone would get stolen on that regular of a basis. Is he still active on all of them, or does he just switch to the new ones once he creates them?
