Gamers? is this normal?

Whenever I'm playing really any form of video game, especially in the action genre, I find myself leaning forward with my character or sort of tilting my head when I'm looking around a corner. I could go on with other examples but that's the general concept.

I do realize that I'm not accomplishing anything, it just happens naturally.

Depends what type of game I'm playing. I don't play FPS any more but when I did, I used to do the same thing. If I fall off something in a game and it's a long way down, my stomach always flips in horror. Sometimes lean left and right when I'm driving a motorbike in a game. Like that's going to help steer it any better!

Oh, I got excited when I saw the phrase "fall off". I thought you were going to say that you fall off your chair trying to look around things in games sometimes, and I was going to be like "Yes! I'm not the only one!"

You know, you really need a padded cell. Meant in the nicest possible way. :P

I do that a little, but my husband does it a lot; I find it hilarious.

Your brain is hard-wired to respond to certain stimuli in certain ways. You'll lean around a corner even if it's a virtual corner and give a little jump when a fake monster comes after you.

I'm replaying Oblivion right now, and I got goosebumps all over when a zombie came at me from a hidden passage in an Ayleid ruin. As far as my hind-brain was concerned, I was fluffing my fur to look larger and present more of a threat -- a reaction that's probably at least 20 million years old, yet it's still part of our genetic code.

People are weird animals, and that is totally normal. :)

    • I've never been able to get into Oblivion, which depresses me. I just can't take the graphic drop from Skyrim to Oblivion anymore.

Thanks for the response. I've never actually seen someone else do this so I've never been sure if I was alone in this.

        • I wasn't aware of that. If I was to try and play it again, would ou say console or PC?

This is completely normal. I do this anytime I do something on the computer or draw or on a game. I think it means you are intensely focused.

I would definitely say PC for both. Steam had them on their big holiday sale, so I picked them up for a song and have thoroughly enjoyed replaying them even with the clunky old graphics.

And yes, even with those lousy graphics, I still lean in my chair to look around corners. :)

I played console and it was okay, but I've heard pc was better. And if you play morrowind it is only for pc and original Xbox. So I would go for pc

  • By the way, this post came about from Star Wars Battlefront when my brother started criticizing me for halfway jumping out of my seat when my character did so in game. I then started looking for other similar incidents and found I do it a lot. A lot a lot.

  • I lean forward to try and look around doorways when playing Deadspace and then realize that it does nothing. Fucking necromorphs.

I move my controller around excessively even though I'm not playing a Wii and it doesn't help in the least little bit.... kind of similar I suppose.

Ah yes, very normal~ When I'm playing Street Fighter 4, sometimes if it was a really close match, I might mimic the K.O. cries of the characters and go all "Guaaaaagh!" *thud*. Well I don't thud but you get the idea. I remember one time when the Wii first came out and I was playing Wii Tennis with friends and family and when the ball was coming towards me, I actually started to move in the direction of the ball like it was going to come out of the TV screen. I stopped myself but I was already seen, haha.

If I'm playing a driving game and I crash, my body (especially my legs) jolt with varying levels of violence.

Sometimes when I play fighting games, I bash the buttons really hard, as if I think that it's going to make my character hit harder.

Shit, you should see me when a creeper comes up to me in Minecraft. Our brains are designed to react in weird ways, games, or not.
