Guy i know is trying to collect massive amounts of ddt

For those who don't know: DDT is an obselete insecticide that's been banned since the 70's. I don't know why he's trying to get so much of it, I figure there might be some practical reason but I seriously have no idea. He doesn't seem like the kind of guy to do something actually bad with it (and if he was, why the fuck would he use DDT of all things?) but again, I have no clue. I don't know him that well.

Any theories would be greatly appreciated

That does not sound normal. It was banned for environmental effects and possibly being a carcinogen; I don't know if you can get high off of it.

    Beats me.

I don’t know, but I’d report it, just to be on the safe side. Most of the comments about mass murderers are that “they didn’t seem the type”.

He was a good boy, he would never harm anyone -says the mom crying over her dead son who shot up some place

Yeah, parents are usually stupid to enough defend their kids despite the fact that it was obvious they did it. I don't understand why.

They don’t want to face the music that they raised a murderer. I went to a school with a lot of messed up kids and the parental denial was shocking, their sons would assault people and they would still insist “he’s a good kid”.

I know this sounds terrible, but whenever I see an adult who's too depressed to function, is violent, or a murderer I think to myself: somewhere along the way this kid's parents failed them. It's one of the reasons I won't have a baby because if they grow up to be shitty, chances are it's my fault.

I couldn't tell ya. People are delusional and like to see people how they think not for who they qctuslly are.

It seems to me that owning DDT (not using it, though) is perfectly legal, and that to report such a thing would be a pointless report that would waste everyone's time, including OP's.

What’s legal isn’t always right. It wouldn’t hurt to have the report on file, so that someone could connect the dots if this individual becomes a suspect.

It's a strange thing to collect.

I'm all but virtually certain that it can't be used to produce explosives, and it's not acutely toxic to humans. DDT powder was widely used by Allied forces during WWII to control insects - particularly mosquitos in areas where malaria was endemic and lice, since they carried typhoid. I recall seeing pictures of US soldiers having DDT powder puffed inside their uniforms, and freed concentration camp prisoners literally surrounded by clouds of the stuff. In the post-war period, there were areas in the USA with serious mosquito problems where the stuff was dispersed from trucks in enormous clouds in residential areas. If it did cause immediate, serious health issues for people, they wouldn't have continued doing that for as long as they did.

The reason DDT was banned (in the USA, but not worldwide) was because it was discovered that it wasn't easily excreted by birds and mammals, so the higher on the food chain an animal was, the greater their load of DDT. It was discovered that a high body-load of DDT in birds caused their eggshells to be thinner, and there was a clear link between widespread use of DDT and the dramatic decline in the population of a number of American predatory and scavenging bird species in the post-WWII period. There have been studies which found some evidence that DDT also messes with the human reproduction system and it might be carcinogenic, but nothing really solid.

Of course, it is possible that the guy is not aware of the facts about the human toxicity of DDT. It could be that he believes it to be just a small step down from nerve agents, and he has something nefarious in mind. Or maybe he's just a weird guy who gets a weird kick out of hoarding something that's banned in the place he happens to live.

I accidentally clicked normal, this is concerning. Personally I would report it, an ex of mine (who many considered functional and almost normal-passing) was trying to hoard dangerous chemicals for an illegal plan so I always err on the side of caution when it comes to this stuff.
