Have you tried lanolin, vitamin E cream or oil or paw paw ointment?
If unsalted butter is working, go for it
Have you seen a dermatologist? They may have some medication options to work better for you.
You sound dehydrated. Drink more water. If you must use moisturizer from the kitchen, go with some coconut oil.
There are actual hand cremes you can buy you know... Smearing butter into your hands isn't the best approach. Just ask your wife, or girlfriend and they'll tell you the best creme to use. My girlfriend has a whole shelf of cosmetic-y things.
I have extremely dry hands and can't live without some kind of moisturizer, which I apply every 2 to 3 hours. Once when I had absolutely nothing to moisturize them with I used a bit of olive oil and it was okay. Butter should work just as well (I'm the one who voted normal hahaha), but it gets messy, doesn't it? I've found that urea-based creams or cocoa butter are the best.
I eat a lot fish which surprises me that my skin is so dry. I don’t eat much red meat (except fish,) more white meat, lots of salads, and an occasional spluge on sweets. I drink water constantly, it wouldn’t surprise if I drink a gallon a day.
