Has is it normal gone stale?

I know this site has ups-and-downs, like anywhere, but I've stopped in several times recently and can't find anything that piques interest.

Lately, it seems overrun by teenage drama, unfunny trolls, and repetition.

Days pass without seeing anything new, then a flood of redundancy, stupidity, and even spam overwhelm the screen.

Perhaps, instead of rejecting 30% of submissions, management could approve 30% of submissions. Would increasing standards of competition produce more intellect? I think it would force users to proofread if management narrowed the likelihood of approval to a few.

I don't know. I'm probably thinking too hard. This is a fun site, which ebbs and flows like everything else in life.

What if that's actually the whole goal of this site? I mean so many of the same questions pop up it's crazy, but doesn't that sort of prove that nobody is really as weird as they think they are? I mean we should give the management here a round of applause for all the help he or she has given people. I sincerely mean that. I don't think that this site has gone stale, because really there are usually a few posts that show up that are somewhat new and hey it's a new day so no problems arise. Some may be the same, some may not be. It's all a matter of how you see it. I personally am not bored, but I've grown use to certain things while being on here.

  • No, I don't agree with you. I don't think it has. To me it seems the same as it ever was. Those problems you listed have always existed.

Occasionally, someone truly brilliant comes along and really shakes things up a bit (for the better). But, since that's not a 'normal' state for this site, I believe it would be unfair to compare the regular times to those special times. hehe -does that make sense (I'm sorry if it doesn't).

Be the change you want to see on IIN, or take a little vacation from it. ;)

You pretty much explained it in the third sentence. It's the same as it's always been, and honestly it's not bad. But yeah you're pretty much right.

I miss him very much. He was a wonderful friend to many people, and caused them to become wonderful friends with each other. He loved community and that trickled down to a great many of us. He is both special in ways some could not see and normal in ways many will not know.

I wish there was a way for those of us who knew him well to stay in contact with him. Fate has denied us.

            • Yeah...he was a pretty likeable guy. He really helped to cement the community.

Can't really blame him for leaving after someone searched Facebook to try and figure out who he was. How creepy.

IIN is amazing, everyone here is so amazing. I see questions on here and think "omg how did you come up with that, you're so clever and inventive" then I see the responses and think "wow I never would have thought of that, the answer would have totally eluded me but here is this genius that figured it out!"

Everyone here is so unique and not at all like other people in the world. I mean we have a guy who writes exclusively about taking dumps, how cool is that, it's an incredible cast of characters on IIN.

    • After reading this comment, I proved I have no life by searching back over the past year.

All I've found were individual users considering quitting, some belligerent (non-specific, profanity laced) gripes, a few complaints about features (thumbs seem to be a big one) and people being mean.

None of those that some may consider similar offered any ideas to improve the system by proposing a solution as I did. However fallible my proposal may be, I thought some might offer to expand on it, but as of now, no one has even addressed it.

I think mods should be a little more exclusive in the approval process, but apparently a majority of users disagree. It's just my opinion.

I posted recently about people complaining less as a solution. Be the change you want to see and ladadadada.

You want awesome posts? Make some. That will increase the competition because others will want to be cool and make cool posts when they see a cool post.

I think what had happened is the older, cooler users don't make stories as they used to and comment more. I feel like I should make more stories myself. I'd make one now but my computer crashed and I have to do some research.

        • I make plenty.

The problem is that the mods don't discriminate. The volume of input never affects the quality. They just go through the lot and approve almost everything.

They need to be more particular.

If nobody criticized establishment, we'd live in a world of rubber stamps and Honey Boo-Boo reruns.

Oh wait. We do. Because people don't offer solutions.

          I tried.

          Thanks for your input.

If you saw the unmod section, you'd be disappointed to see how many quality podts are rejected in favour of the shite.

            Comment Hidden ( show )
          • Freedom_

Most estabishments are criticized often enough. Everyone has individual preferences that can't always be tended to. Some say the mods let too much through, others feel their stories are rejected too often. I just ignore the stories i don't find worthy rather than pining over them. Who are any of us, including the mods, to say that someone's question is not valid just because we don't like it? Someone else might still relate to the question and want to add input even if you don't.

Btw, I don't live in honey boo boo world. If you are watching reruns of it you are supporting and enabling it.

            • You live on the same planet I do. I don't watch it, but commercial breaks are riddled with adds for it and newsstands are plastered with her picture. The show would disappear if there wasn't a following. Reality shows like that exemplify the degeneration of sociological integrity. Our collective I.Q. is dropping. You're a part of the human race...so you're living in a Honey Boo Boo world.

Establishments aren't criticized enough. It's one thing to look down on me if I just sat here and bitched about how it sucks, but I didn't. I offered constructive alternatives.

If you proposed that quality is subjective, I'd give you that. You touched on that a little, but most of your attack was directed at my criticism...which I won't apologize for.

  • bananaface

Yeah, I feel the exact same way. Although I don't think reducing the moderation threshold will help, I actually think it'll make things worse. People will become frustrated and disheartened that their posts aren't getting through moderation. People are already pissy about how some of theirs' don't already make it through.

To be completely honest, it occurred to me the other day that I wished I could just add some of the people I consider to be friends on here on Facebook, or some such thing. Don't think anyone would want me harassing them, though, ha! 'Tis a shame. I want to be able to talk to them, etc., but IIN doesn't hold much interest for me, really. Just the people, and I don't even talk to them that often any more.

Almost everyone on the site namechanges every few months. If the site is populated by the same people all the time, it should never get any better or worse.

What if the namechanging itself is causing it, by not allowing people to form deeper bonds with each other? What if anonymity is the enemy of whatever causes us to be nice?

The site definitely hasn't gone stale. You just got bored of it. It happens to everyone. I have been here for a few years, with truly fluctuating emotions along the way. Sometimes I get really sick of this site and leave it for months... but then suddenly I just feel like coming back badly again.

Let me say more, the site isn't even that much about the quality of the posts. The comments the users make is what truly makes this site amazing. And though sometimes I miss certain people that don't come back here anymore, I think that pretty much we always get interesting people among the userbase.

I'm new here, but IIN has quickly become one of my favorite sites. I do see a lot of the same questions. But depending on how serious the topic is and whether or not a bunch of trolls are responding, I may or may not respond to the same topic. If it's serious and the OP hasn't seen all of the similar posts, that OP still deserves to receive a helpful, constructive reply. Words are very powerful, and sometimes we have no idea when we're helping someone. If IIN is stale, then stale is in, as far as I'm concerned.
