Have you ever done any scambaiting?

Have you ever or do you currently scambait?

Scambaiting is basically turning the tables on a (typically) Nigerian 419, craigslist or romance internet scammer. I'm sure you've got the random email asking for your help to transfer money or gold dust, or a mysterious letter they have waiting for you with a check for millions....or someone offering you a check overpaying you for your crappy item on craigslist.

They try to scam you but you know it's a scam, you play with them making them believe they are fooling you while you make them do crazy things, take embarrassing photos, go through all kinds of rituals, fill out crazy and funny forms, and so forth...and all the while they are thinking they are going to get a big payday after fullfilling all your crazy requirements.

It's great fun, and serves a good purpose as you are wasting their time and resources so they have all the less time and opportunity to scam a real victim.

  • I know a guy who does this (to men, he pretends to be a woman), I think it sounds very fun XD I'd love to give it a go sometime, but I'm not very good at making up lies on the spot. I'd have to plan it out a bit.

Sounds like playing with fire to me. You better make sure they don't end up wanting payback. They very well may be smarter than you.

    • People do this all the time as a hobby, there is websites dedicated to it...I've NEVER heard of one single scambaiter being harmed in any manner. These people are not smart, and most live in Africa and are dirt poor. What are they going to do?? Nothing.

We had a TV-show here called 'BASTA'. They did it to a Nigerian guy who actually came to Belgium. The guys from BASTA had arranged a meeting for a transaction, and after it they handed him a gift: an extremely heavy pot. It was funny to watch him walk away with it.
I think they kept him on the leash for about three weeks
