Have you ever felt the urge to just jump when you're high up?

Maybe it's because I want to skydive or hang-glide, but every time I'm standing somewhere really high up, like on a balcony or a clifftop, I get this weird impulse to just jump. It's not even something suicidal... just wanna fly.

Yeah! I wanna be like a bird! 523
Yes--I just wanna end it all/see what the other side's like. 230
Sometimes... it's kinda weird, though. 823
Um, not really. 68
Are you crazy? That's ridiculous. 58

I sometimes want to just drive into the other lane in the highway too. I would really never do it... but knowing I could just feels awesome.

  • Yes, but the fear of dying has always stopped me from making an attempt.

I'd love to as well. It's a shame doing so comes with the ever so slight handicap of probable death. :(

  • Actually It unnerves me because of how easy I could kill myself.. 3 steps and I would be dead.

OMG, that happens to me too! I feel the urge to jump and at the same time, wonder what it's like to feel my skull shattering into pieces. Of course I won't do it but having the urge is scary enough.

This has actually been an observation of psychology for decades. A lot of people get this urge. Some evolutionary psychologists believe it's a relic passed down from our bird-ish ancestors.

I have no death wish, but I am interested what life after death is like, if there is anything at all. Before I ever contemplate trying to experience such a thing, I want to live my life a bit.

      There is life after death:

If you are saved it is life eternal in Heaven with our Saviour.

If unsaved, well it is eternal damnation, like in hell with satan.

Im an atheist so im not 100% sold on the idea of a god and a devil. sometimes i think there may be a heaven and hell, or that life either ceases completely or your a spirit left on earth.

I get this all the time! The school I go to has a building with a 5 story high atrium. Every time I look over the balcony I always wonder what it'd be like to jump over. Heh, I sorta wish there was a non-fatal/non-crippling way of doing so.

This is a very normal urge that people sometimes get when standing over an edge of something. I'm not sure why this occurs though. I was hiking with some friends one time and we came to the open edge of a cliff to rest. I walked to the edge to see how high up we were and I got this VERY strong urge to throw myself off the edge. I stood motionless for a while, contemplating this. One of my friends had to pull me away.

Boys and girls, you don't know it, but the question you are playing with is a philosophical one that has been addressed by the greatest thinkers in the world. Essentially you're trying to re-invent the wheel. If you ever get serious about ideas, put on your thinking cap and jump into BEING AND NOTHINGNESS by Jean-Paul Sartre. You'll find the first chapter is difficult. Skip that, and go to the second. You'll have quite a ride.

Lets just say,I was just on a trip to the Grand Canyon and my friend had to keep me from jumping the whole time. Not suicide,I just wanted to do it so badly!
My advice?study base jumping like me.

  • I think they should reconstruct a, obviously fake but large enough, cliff and have people (while connected to a safety harness) stand on the top of them while having the knowledge that they are able to jump off and be safe. Then we could see what happens Lol.

Yeah I've felt the urge to jump off bridges many times. Just knowing that all this pain and suffering could be over in life. Then I think, what would happen to me on the other side if I did that? It's not that I'm not happy necessarily, it's just that sometimes knowing that you could choose how you die can give you a sense of power and freewill. Ok, I know that sounds goth or emo but that's just me. Please repond. Thanks

Once.I did in fact jump off a bridge.A bunch of niggaz were chasing me.Yelling at me.For no particular reason.Scaring the shit out of me.I was just walking over the edge of a wall,I felt like they were coming for me,so I had to jump even if It was slightly too high for me.So I busted my heel. What an unbearable pain.I just thought:This one is gonna keep me from getting out of my house for a long time.I'm still grumpy about it.Tho.
But I couldn't really understand why I was laughing out loud and howling at the moon even if I was in so much pain I could barely walk.
So I crawled my way home.Walking on four legs.
My mum went like:What the fuck happened?
    Me:I'm still not sure yet.
Mum:Are you in pain?Do you want me to call the doctor?
    Me:LEAVE ME THE FUCK ALONE!
    Mum:Jeee!
Me:I'm sorry.I just need to think this shit over.
Mum:You get out of the house one time after only god know how much time and you come back crawling on four legs like a dog.
    Me:So what?
    Mum:Nothing.I was just saying.
Me:Whatever.Could you please drag me to my room?I can't walk.Just grab my foot and drag me.No!Not that foot you OUCH!(My brain was like short circuiting every time I cursed)

I have this same urge. Sometimes I feel like I can feel wings, in a phantom-limb kind of way. The same way as I feel where my arm is. Some part of my brain seems to believe I can fly.

As someone else mentioned its said that we retain an ancient part of the bird brain that we are descended from and the fact that we all seem to want to do this probably bears this out.I suggest you try hang gliding. You get to run off the top of a very high place and it (usually)doesnt hurt.
