Have you ever got a pet and got rid of it immediately?

Have you ever got any kind of animal/pet, with the intent of keeping it, but got rid of it within a very short time?

For reasons such as: too much work, it crapped in the house, it was noisy, it ruined your things-in other words, it got on your nerves. You COULD have worked through it, could have had more patience, but didn't.

These factors DON'T count: allergies, moving, landlord (unless you knowingly, purposely took in a pet without permission), new baby, medical problems.

Yes, it seems to be a regular pattern with me. 9
Yes, but rarely. 5
Yes, only once. 20
No, never. Till death do we part! 50
Never even had a pet. 7
This is why I won't take on a pet, I'd probably do this. 1
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • Parvovirus almost made me put down my dog; it wasn't originally mine. The owner had bred her to be a fighting dog but left her on the streets to die when he discovered she was sick.

A sum of money and several bloody messes later, Angel was cured.

I had to vote for "Yes only once" because my situation was not exactly there.

I got myself a cat while I was on shore duty and had him for a few years before I returned to ship-duty.

During deployments I found him housing either at a friend's or at the vet's since my vet did boarding.

Finally I had a long deployment coming up followed by transfer to an overseas duty station.

So... I made a point of ensuring my cat had a good home to go to. Thankfully that place ended up being with family members so I can still see him when I visit, and get updates and photos of him.

My family had to get rid of one dog before, but not for any of those reasons. The reason was that she was mistreated as a puppy (rescue dog, you see), and she was just totally untrainable, no matter how much we tried. We even sent her to a boot camp for disobediant dogs, but to no avail. After a month we had to give her back to the dog home, and I think she's been rehomed with a more experianced dog-owner now, which is nice. We got another rescue dog who was much smaller and easier to handle a few months after that.

If you got rid of a pet just because you couldn't be bothered to get off your arse and do something practical about it, that just makes you a total douche. Please don't get a pet next time.

I got a cat once... then I realised I hate cats. Therefore the cat was gone in a week.

    A few times.

I had a crazy dog that just barked and went in circles.

A few fish that got flushed.

And a cat that I dropped off about 5 miles away from home and the damn thing came back!

When I was 11, one of my family's two dogs died. We grieved for a year and then decided we had enough love for two dogs again. My mum had heard about someone who was mistreating a dog of the same breed we'd always had and she was determined to march in. And it kind of worked. The dog came back to our house. But she was terrified by our remaining dog, who was extremely jealous and not at all happy at sharing us.

My mum decided enough was enough after two days. I remember being angry and blaming her for taking the easy way out of this and passing the dog on. In retrospect, she was right. An ill-treated dog doesn't need to go to a home where they're going to be ill-treated either by humans or another dog.

I'm gona reply to you rather than get into the cat debate down below. Glad I helped you with something you posted ...

We got a rabbit once for our son (8 yo), think it was incontinent coz I was changing newspapers in the hutch up to 5 times a day! After a month or two, I put an ad for it, hutch, and all its accoutrements, free to a good home in the pet shop. My son didn't miss it for a week! Then we told him it had died of starvation coz he never went near it! We're such bad parents ;o)

Took in a rescue dog after that - which we still have :o)

  • I got a turtle one morning when I was going to school....I left him in my sister's care until I got back and when I did...it apparently 'ran' away.

Another time I got a hamster for my birthday and within the next 2-3 weeks, it committed suicide.

  • We got a new cat, a week later it died from a car hitting it. It wasn't my fault.

    • Aww poor kitty! D: Cats have a terrible habit of being too confident and not getting out the way.

      • I think it was more of a curse. For a certain period of time, all the new cats we would get would die from a car hitting them. Or maybe it was always the same driver pushing on the pedal when he saw a cat crossing. Or suicidal cats. Bope.

It's been a very long time now since we had a cat die that way. I have to admit, my cats are weird. They go lay down in the middle of the street sometimes or go under a cars wheels, like what the hell is wrong with them?

        • Ever think of just keeping them inside and safe? If it's not your fault, then whose is it? It's your cat, and the road is for cars. It's not the driver's fault. It's not the cat's fault. That leaves YOU.

At the risk of offending people I genuinely like, I'm pondering why you got voted down to -4 for talking about keeping animals safe.

My ex is a cat person and she suspects her neighbour poisoned her outdoor cat because he was leaving a mess in the neighbour's garden. She has another cat now and has made the choice to keep her as an indoor cat, partially against her wishes because she doesn't like restricting freedom. But she's opted for safety over freedom. I wonder if that's a metaphor for the world we humans live in.

          • Excuse me? So it was my fault that my cat who for 16 years was never ill, went missing one day and I found her eventually after what it seemed like she had was a stroke?

You can't lay the blame on the owner when some people drive like maniacs with no respect whatsoever.

          • Oh right. It is my fault that they run through my legs when I open the door. It is my fault that I let them live their lives instead of being stuck inside a home and having shit all to do. It's also my fault that I can't drive and decide to drive over the speed limit and end up hitting a cat. It's also my fault that I don't help my cats look left and right before crossing the street. I might as well just go unemployed and put a gps on my cats so I can watch them all day and night.

I don't know how I sleep at night. Thanks for pointing it all out to me.

            • Then don't own cats!! Cat after cat gets hit because you can't or won't keep them inside and you keep getting more?
