Please get him treated immediately, and if he is already on medication, make sure the dog takes the full course. Don't touch the faeces and make sure to wash your hands thoroughly before and after meals. You will be fine
Apparently, humans have their own species of whipworms (lucky us) and it's rare for a person to acquire canine whipworms.

When i was a kid i had worms pinworm or roundworm or whatever they are called.
My grandma had a botfly lay larvae in her leg back in the 90s.
Some kids I looked after have had worms. They had to have special "chocolate" to kill them.
Once your dog is treated, you should have it on a regular worming treatment.
As a young man I had four worms from a Mango fly, at least that is what we called it. All clothes had to be ironed to kill the eggs on it. It made a pimple and as it became bigger, it would itch until scratched. Eventually I pinched one and out came a small worm. Horrible!
I had a three-legged cat that I rescued when I was in my first apartment in college, and he had a tapeworm. I was wondering where the dried up little rice grains were coming from that I kept finding on my futon. It's a good thing I never ate those, because truthfully I had a 50 lb bag of rice in my kitchen so I did cook a lot of rice in those days! Scary, huh?
I got pretty grossed out the first time I saw a tapeworm segment inching along our cat's fur.
If a cat is allowed outside, it's almost a dead cert that they'll have tapeworms that they've picked up from critters they've killed and eaten or from fleas they've collected on their travels.
The worms don't seem to do them much harm, but they are disgusting.
