That poll is useless because it has no provision for having been or still being addicted to more than one thing!

I was addicted to nicotine for many decades and now have emphysema and have also got myself into some weird situations because of sex addiction, which I'm fairly sure stems from my experience of sexual abuse as a child. Apparently it's not uncommon for this to show up in adolescence, as in my case, because sexuality has been imposed on a child too young to deal with it.

It's a shit of a condition: manageable up to a point but incurable. It means I get very tired and can't do a lot of the things I used to do. If there were one thing in my past I could change it would be to never smoke.

I fell for the Quit bullshit that when you stop smoking your organs return to normal within a certain time: not your lungs if you've smoked for a long time. I wasn't diagnosed until I'd been off the smokes for about a year. I also did the common self deception of telling myself I'd stop when it was affecting my health: well all those holes in my lungs were there with no symptoms until it was too late.

Yeah, a few years ago I took shit loads of MDXX substances and now have severe Intrusive Thought OCD. Later I took speed and ended up really paranoid for a while (but that's better now.) During the latter part of my drug-taking days, I was taking shit loads of newly released benzos and benzo like substances to try and overcome to the results from the MDXX substances, and I cold turkied benzos once, and weaned myself off another time.

Now I take no drugs except for poppy tea once every three months. I've concluded from my time of doing drugs, and hanging around a lot of druggies, that for most people drugs are actually fine, because most people moderate themselves. There are a few people; however, like myself, who can't handle it and it just wrecks us.

I would vote sex if I was an ignorant cunt but sex addiction is wayyyyy more rare than people think. Someone who gets laid more than you or has multiple partners isn't addicted.

Addiction has nothing to do with how often you indulge in the addiction, it's about how the addiction affects your life. If it's affecting your finances, your job, your health, your other relationships and you keep doing it regardless, that's almost certainly addictive.

Sex is obviously a problem when you're a young adult full of hormones and have a terrific girlfriend.
But it passes with the years as you grow up and break up.

Porn addiction yes, sex no. You can still call it sex addiction if you want but it's not a negative addiction like the other things on the list. It's a basic biological need. That's like saying I have a shitting addiction. I do it a lot, I need to do it or I'll have side effects. Guess OP forgot that on the list.

You don't need to have sex. You feel a need because of your hormones but you don't really need it. Or else every person in the world that can't have sex for a long period of time for X reason would die.
It can be a really negative addiction, especially if it goes to the point of missing class, work or important appointments just to have sex.

Depends how you define need. You won't die without it but your life will likely be worse.

It "can" be a negative addiction of course. In theory, literally anything could be. But the diagnosis is wrong I have never heard of someone who craves sex THAT bad.

              Comment Hidden ( show )
          • All addiction is negative :P if it’s a serious enough thing that you feel that your life is lacking without it or disrupts your daily life to fulfill it then it’s no good. Anything can be a addiction if you take it to the extreme or it becomes harmful mentally/physically.
Sex can absolutely be a negative addiction.

Yes in theory it can, but not practically. I have never seen or heard of what I would consider negative. And there's no objective health detriment either like there is for drugs, alcohol smoking ect

Okay I'm only reading one article.

If you actually read what I said, I never said sex CAN'T be an addiction, I just said it's not a practical, legitimate concern. Does that make sense or no?

Anyways what do those things I said have to do with self discipline. A lot of addiction mostly has emotional backgrounds that are not so easy to deal with

            • DIO

Believing that you have self discipline and actually having self discipline is different and a common mistake that most people make.
It doesn't matter what excuses are used for addiction, whether it's emotional backgrounds or anything else. Self discipline is highly related to addiction, as every addicted people lack self discipline. Someone with a great level of self discipline do not fall for his potential addictions and knows when and how to stop.
If internet and self harm are you addictions, then clearly your self discipline is between low and non existant.
