Have you read at least one book this year?

Have you read at least one book this year?

By having read a book I mean having read it on your own will (not being forced to read it for school etc) and having read it in its "full version" from the beginning to the end.

By "book" I mean printed books, NOT e-books.

I am not interested in reading books at all. 13
No, I haven´t read any book this year. 24

  • I feel sorry for those who do see paper books as so obsolete that they compare them to tablets carved in stone and cave paintings. It makes me wonder how many tablets carved in stone have these people read this year.
This poll was created by a dinosaur, so please be more sensitive to an animal who belongs to an extinct species. I just do not see what is so ridiculous when I want to ask a question about printed books.
To me, reading an e-book gives a quite different experience than reading a printed book, so I naively supposed that book readers would be tolerant enough to understand that I specified my question to printed books. Next time if I open a poll Have you read a book in a foreign language?, will you insist that "oh, but books in my language are books, too, why cannot I count them?"

I agree with you, printed books are a much different experience than electronic. Same information, but different feeling.

I don't know how many books I've finished this year. I read a lot of non-fiction and reference books that don't always get read from beginning to end. I'm often in the middle of 5 or so books at a time.

I'm sorry if what I wrote offended you. It wasn't the intention. I was just teasing VioletTrees. Looking at my comment again, I can see how it might look like my words were either directed at you or were about you, but they honestly weren't.

I was curious about the distinction you made and I now see you've answered that too. I certainly wasn't teasing you about it, though. I hadn't even noticed your comment when I made mine. :)

I'm an avid non-fiction reader, and most of my books (99%) come from yard sales, estate sales and other such second-hand means....so, since I tend to read strictly non-fiction, much of what I read is used for reference so I don't usually go in order from front to back or cover to cover, I use my books as needed or desired for anything from dreams to needs!!

Yes, but not nearly as many this year as in the past, been a rather busy year for me. Did squeeze some time for "Do androids dream of electric sheep?" and a few of the "Mysteries of the unknown" collection. and maybe a few more, but i cant recall them.

In the garden of beasts describes the life of American ambassador to Germany after Hitler took power. Good book.

Read trickle down tyranny about current administration.

I've read the first 5 volumes of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni and am currently on the second book in Michael Bond's Monsieur Pamplemousse series.
I know I've read more, but that's all I can remember.

I still have lots that haven't been read yet, but need doing so.

A book I haven't read before? Only 5. Though, I've read my favourites at least 2 times each this year.

There are nice things about printed books, but not counting reading e-books as actually reading is ridiculous.

You know, I read like 2 books (not counting the ones for class) and A LOT of comics. Joe the Barbarian, the Goon, Red Robin, Spidermen, and a little bit of X-Force.

    Well...

My summer homework for Ap Lit. I had to read "Tess of the D'Urbervilles" and "A Prayer for Owen Meany." During second semester of the school year, for class, I read "The Grapes of Wrath," "A room of One's Own," and "I am America and SO CAN YOU."

But for fun I took up "Ender's Game" which bores me and "The Iron Heel" which again bores me.

  • Thank you for all your comments.

To the distinction between books and e-books: I was curious about how many people still read good old paper books.
My background - I love reading books, both paper books and e-books (one advantage of e-books is that they do not take much space in your flat/apartment because in my flat it is hard to walk because of the books lying everywhere, including kitchen) but I have a special passion for paper books. Maybe because I started to use the Internet just 4-5 years ago or so, and I feel that I remember more from a book which I read on paper than online or in e-book format. But there are many books which I can find only online and not on paper, so I am thankful for e-books, too.

I thought that people who read books on paper as well as e-books (like the nice posters above) will definitely fall under the category YES of my poll, so it made no difference to exclude e-books if I set the limit "at least one paper book".
I just want to see the percentage of people who read versus those who do not. That should explain also my limit "at least one". I am not a bookshop-keeper though:), no marketing research is going on here.

It's almost August! Seriously, if you ask that in the middle of January, i could see some variance, but, ...oh well, we'll see, i suppose i am placing too much faith in mankind again, am i not? ...

Curious about the distinction between books and e-books but you did stipulate so I'll play along.

Yes, but not very many. Only nine or ten. The Kindle says I've read 72 this year (not counting the one I'm halfway through).

I'm wondering how these figures will change over time, i.e. what will be the first year I don't read a paper book. I'm guessing it'll never happen because I own so many although I noticed I didn't read a single papery book in December last year.

  • I've read about 9 books in full, two or three on my Kindle, and I've started a bunch in print and e-book but haven't finished them. I read in spurts; 2nd one coming up soon I can feel.

Not really. Its still something that can be read but the term "book" is usually for the traditional kind that's made from paper and has pages that you can psychically turn. An e-book is something that only exists in a digital format.
