Herb gardening question

I know there are a few of you who garden here, mainly on properties, I know. I have a green thumb for all the foliage and ornamental flowers I have in my very roomy balcony, but I have never been able to keep herbs alive for too long.

I know I can google this (and I have) but I'd like to hear from anyone here about how to do it successfully.
