Hours and days of operation make no sense!

Overall, the hours and days of 'normal' business operation make NO sense! I don't understand why we continue with a system that is so idiotic.

1. Why do so many places open so damn early? If there's no logical reason to begin early in the AM then why do it? Why force people to have to wake up to a screeching alarm clock if it's not necessary?

2. Why is this weekday/weekend ritual still so important? It's meaningless! The notion of weekends being synonymous with 'free time' really screws things up.

3. Why not adopt a more staggered week and more staggered hours so that people can take care of official business more efficiently? Banks and government offices should be open either later in the day or closed on one weekday so as to be open on a weekend day. It never made sense that these places expect you to be able to do your business while your job required you to be on the clock during the same hours and days. It's only very recent that banks finally realized they needed to extend their hours!! Even with the minor extension of hours it's STILL very difficult to get business done for many people.

I just don't understand why this inefficient system of days and hours is still so strictly adhered to with the way that the world has changed. The reasons behind the days and hours just don't make sense anymore in many cases. Not all, there are plenty of logical reasons why *some* places should operate on certain time schedules, but a lot of it makes no sense anymore.

What do you think? is it normal that this system seems so stupid?

You know what I find really annoying? People leaving me phone messages at work at 6am complaining that I am not in the office. And then they complain about my lack of accommodation to other time zones when I explain we are a small office and I can't always have someone there...and how do I tell them their question was answered in the first sentence of the voicemail greeting but they were looking too hard for a reason to be annoyed that they weren't listening to the message.

I agree with you for the most part although changing the system would have one problem I can see.

It may actually create social groups that are nearly unable to contact each other and so actually create some rifts within society. Think about it. If all the bankers seem to work from noon to 8 or something and then office workers work conflicting hours, it seriously limits the amount of people that you can possibly interact with.

This fault could be overcome rather easily, but it's something to consider.

Also, the banks' hours are ridiculous.
