How did you feel when you left for college?

Assuming you went, or are going, to a college away from home - how did you deal with it? Truth is, I'm nervous and afraid that if I do leave and get there that I'll feel lonely and desperate to come back home. I'm wondering if this is a normal feeling, is it? How did (or do) you feel?

It's normal to feel this way 20

I was glad to get out of my drunk and screaming parents house. Being on my own in an apartment gave me a chance for my headaches and scars to dissipate. School and work provided a welcome distraction to loneliness (I don't drink/smoke/go out/have friends so I had no social life).

Eventually I got a boyfriend and he moved in. I visit my parents often and I have NEVER once regretted moving out. My parents also stopped seeing me as and treating me like a child, stopped buying me groceries and telling me how to spend my money. I can relate the experience to a snake casting off it's old skin to allow growth.

  • I was excited to leave for college. I don't think you have anything to worry about, I felt right at home within a week. It is normal to feel nervous though, many people I know were.

    • And you weren't feeling lonely with no one you knew being there? I know it's important to make friends but what about in the very beginning?

Even from the very beginning, I was excited. I make friends easily so I'm sortable confident in that area. Sorry if my situation isn't applicable to you.

I think the best thing to do is try to relax and be confident in the first week or so. Most of the students there feel the same way so they'll understand, also you don't want to have to make friends once all the groups have been established. It will be harder that way:/

Anyway, just chill and realise that everyone feels the same as you and you deserve to be there:D Good luck!!

    • Well the thing is, I'm going to be a transfer student that'll put me automatically as a junior so I'm sure the groups will have already been established. But I just always thought that it'd be different with college. From what I'm experiencing now, it's not as cliquey as high school was. I guess I'm just nervous about being lonely once I move there, fingers crossed for a roommate who's also a transfer.

Oh, is this American college? Sorry, over here we call it University I think, so I thought you meant something else:L Sorry, completely forgot about the different names in America:P

Anyway, you're right, it won't be cliquey and it probably won't be difficult to make friends as long as you put yourself out there:) Also, if you're gonna live with people then you'll definitely have at least one opportunity to make friends.

I'm sure you'll be fine when you get there, jut try to chill:D
