How do i deal with my racist/offensive father

No wonder my mother divorced him. My dad says a lot of offensive and racist stuff. It’s as if he has no filter. He even says it in public! One time he whispered to me about this chubby girl in front of us. He called her a cow and supposedly she heard what he said.

Her boyfriend turned around and got real angry. To be honest I’m afraid that I’ll grow up and be my dad. I don’t know what to do.

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

    WTH
fat has nothing to do with race.
I don't like jews, but they're not all fat. That's stereotyping, and
    That's just wrong.
    Get you predudices straight.
Cows are nice, what's the offence?

Being fat is a race?. A lot of times people who don't know how to joke try to be funny but wind up just coming off as a rude asshole.

The fact that he whispered his rude comments about the heavy woman suggests that he does have a social filter. If he didn't, he would have spoken his thoughts loudly.

Maybe it's just attention-seeking behaviour: he knows that saying rude stuff gets people's attention. Like a two year-old, deep down he feels that any attention - even negative attention - is better than being ignored.

Your concern about growing up to be like your father is understandable, but not really justified. We are not clones of our parents, and we're not fated to do and say exactly the same things they do. There's no reason why the things he does that make you feel angry or embarrassed now should suddenly start to seem fine to you as you get older.

You can't change him, so probably the best thing you can do is ignore him when he says things you find offensive. If it is indeed attention-seeking, then the lack of response could result in him getting bored and finding something else to talk about.

You seem to know what he is doing is worng and that's good. As long you do what you believe is right and then you will not become like him.

  • Lol, it's ok you don't have to be like your father. You have your own identity. Growing up is a totally controlled process and you handle it yourself.

Let the man have opinions no matter how uncomfortable, so yeah it's pretty normal
