How do you feel about animal actors?

From PETA dot org:

"There is nothing glamorous about showbiz for primates, big cats, bears, and other animals who are used in television, film, or advertising; exploited as sports mascots; or used as props in novelty displays. Torn away from their mothers as infants, these animals are subjected to abusive training methods and forced to spend most of their lives in small, filthy cages, deprived of everything that is natural and important to them. Trainers who supply animals to the entertainment industry are frequently cited by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for violating the federal Animal Welfare Act, which establishes only minimal guidelines for animal care. Social animals such as primates, elephants, and wolves are often forced to live alone, causing them severe psychological stress and anxiety."

"Unlike humans, no ape ever dreams of being a star on the big screen. To them, 'performing' is stressful, confusing, and often torturous."

Since it's not an is it normal question, poll options allow you vote however you like.

I don't think the idea is inherently wrong, but it would not surprise me if many animals used for acting were treated in a way that isn't acceptable.

  • I cant stand PETA they need to get over themselves, I find it hard to believe in most of what they say especially when they are guilty of abuse and killing animals

But PETA means People Eating Tasty Animals, how could you not stand them? They've been bringing home the bacon since 1950's! (Possibly earlier)

Why do these people always attribute human attributes to animals?
"Torn away from their mothers as infants," is meant to tear at the heart strings of humans and in many cases are not something an animal cares about or even understands.
Pets are "Torn away from their mothers as infants" every day, and I've yet to hear one complain or become neurotic because of it.
As much as PETA may wish to do good, many animals fair much better in captivity than they would in the wild, with the shrinking habitats and destruction of their food sources and environment by humans.
I completely lost any respect when PETA when they campaigned to stop humans from eating crabs and lobsters because they "screamed" when being boiled! Crustaceans can NOT feel pain and the "screaming" heard when boiling them is the shell expanding with the heat.

I don't know what to say about the quote. I would sincerely hope it's an overstatement. I can see how it applies to certain animals, but not others when it comes to the enjoyment of performing. Dogs and Dolphins seem to enjoy it, but I suppose an animal will do anything if its routinely rewarded with a treat.

I noticed you have a few animal star names as voting options. I have a few to add (due to their wonderful performances on celluloid)

    Skippy the bush kangaroo
    Milo (The Mask)
    Coco (Red Dog)
And that jack russell in the movie "The Artist." It's performance in that film absolutely astounded me, how expressive that dog was. I was even thinking afterwards the academy should have an award to honour animal performers.

Typical emotive language from PETA. I bet none of them even have cats. And, if they do, I bet they've not trained them up to dance on electrified surfaces for money.
