How do you feel about people who refuse to go to college?

Everybody has their reasons and I support their refusal to not go. 238
College is not the only way to make a living, so it's fine to not go. 281
I think anybody who has the opportunity, should go to College. 169
I would look down on that person. 43

  • Yes how dare people get fed up with having to go to kindergarden to be trained to go to school and from school be trained to go to highschool and from high chool to be trained to go to college. How dare they not like that way of life. -sarcasm-.

  • I was joking :)

Humor doesn't travel very well through a keyboard and text.

But inversely I do believe society should support education of all kind. In the Roman Era they called it The Forum. It was a place where people gathered to discuss the latest ideas; a place for the common man to "philosophize".

Today our Forum is Sixteen and Cosmopolitan. Our youth is being raised with Kim Kardashian as our hero and saviour.

Im not against college at all but Im against the ridiculous cost of most colleges.
College= people paying a shitload of money just so they can be in debt for years, then hopefully pay said shitload of money back...and if they live long enough, make some money to retire with. Something wrong that people have to pay THAT much to have the privilege make a decent living...
Some countries have almost free or low tuition for their citizens to get an education(not in good old USA though).

University is way over rated. My thoughts are to get into a company with a future at the bottom and train with someone and work yourself up.

This never happened to me being a factory rat for 42 years, but I am happy, neat husband, sons, daughters-in-law, and grand kids on the way.

Just because someone has a degree doesn't mean they're smarter than anyone else.

I've met a lot of BRILLIANT techs who never went to college. Instead, they joined the military and received technical training.

And by technical training I mean a military training command that's tougher than any pansy ass college. Training where you're in one class for 40 hours a week, where scores below 80 are failing. Oh and on top of that you're expected to maintain your uniforms, living quarters, stand watches etc...

And even with the 0400 reveille and the crappy work load, it's still easier than being deployed.

So there's reasons to not go to college right away. One of them being that you're already working at a job getting technical experience - experience that often matters more than a piece of paper that says "graduated".

I completly agree with your comment that just because someone has a degree it doesn't mean that they're smarter than anyone else. Sometimes people cannot afford to get a degree or life has other plans for a person. Even if a person does get a degree we all know that here in the real world that's not nesacerally (sorry I'm a terrible speller)a passport for job for life. Not only that not all people are academic anyways but they could be very intellectual in other ways.
I'd never look down or pass judgement on anyone I've no right to. People have their own reasons for doing/not doing what they do. x

It all depends on what they want to do in their lives, though having higher education is a definite advantage over someone who doesn't.
In my opinion, there are domains where one doesn't require a degree to be successful, like: the arts (painting, sculpting, music, etc), web design, some programming and sales. If they're very talented at what they do, they can be very successful on their own. I'm not saying college is not an important part of life, but it's not for everyone.

They should go when they are ready. Forcing them to go is asking for them to fail. They will get very little out of the experience. They should have a choice: College (or trade school), military, or a volunteer group like Americorps. B

But I'm willing to let people just do nothing. I don't agree, but if you make education sound like punishment, who would want it?

I second this idea. Personally, I would have benefited from college WAAAY more if I had worked a crappy job for a year or so before jumping into college.

I am a personal trainer. I completed a 1000 hour course and I am nationally certified. I have very high end clients and get paid over $70 per hour. I never went to college and have own my apartment, no debt! and I am only 25. It's not for everyone!

  • They should all be FORCED to go to college. It's the only way.

Personally college was a great experience and it taught me a lot but it's not for everyone. For some there is no need to go to college to fulfill their life.

honestly with the current job market and how high student loans are, I understand people not wanting to put themselves in debt and not get a job.
Back in the day I really teed off my mom and dad, and refused to go. I made d's and f's in school even if I studied my ass off. So, I went to a cheapie trade school where I excelled for the first time ever. I make pretty good money now. Whatever you do ,be a self starter.

College helps the tertiary sector and above.
We still need our primary and secondary sectors.

I sometimes regret my decision to go to college. I could have spent the same time and money traveling the world and having experiences. I'm going to have so much debt when I get out I'm going to have to focus on paying that back.

Many people do very well with no college and then they dont have to deal with the massive debt.

i'm fine if someone doesn't want to go to college to get a degree/diploma/scholarship all it means is less competition for me to get into a college and the better chance i have of getting accepted into a job over them :).

Some people aren't academically minded and would be better off just going into full-time work/a more vocational education course/military/army.

There are school's where you can learn a trade without having to go to college. So I feel like if those people choose not to go to college they could always use one of those tech school's as another option, or whatever, it's there decision what they wanna do with there lives. Sometime's you can do very well with something without having to go to college. I feel like, as long as your getting enough money to get by in life, and as long as your happy it's all good.

if they can go to college..should do it. they will regret if not.

Not that college make you smarter ( in certain way it does). College teach you how to THINK,have method, be organize, solve problems, patience, concentration.
any mayor you take even if you never work on it . It just prove that you can do it. prove that you are capable to solve issues and get to the end of something .

  • I understand that college isn't for everyone. I also understand that everyone cannot afford the tuition. However, if you have the opportunity and you're just being lazy.. I feel that's a waste. However, atleast you're not taking someone else's spot in a full class of people. who is motivated and ready to make something of themselves.
I cannot stand lazy people, who refuse to make something of their life.
I do believe you are free to do whatever you please, if it makes you happy.
But if you have the opportunity, and are choosing to sit at home on your lazy arse, and not contributing to society or the good of the human population.. then.. what were you born for? What good are you doing?

I don't want to go to college, but I'm different. I already know what I want to do for a living, and it really doesn't require an education at all. Now if what I wanted to do DID require an education, fuck yes I'd be motivated as hell to go to one. But, my dream job doesn't need one. I'll still need a job to pay for the supplies, but that won't be much of an issue.

I think people should go if they can. You dont have to go immediatly, just when they are ready. The jobs are getting harder to get into, as they are requiring more education to get in those jobs. Soon, youll need college just to get a McDonalds job! (Unless they make you lean more in high school)

If you dont have the money, you can apply for grants, loans, or if you can, scholarships.

As for those who refuse to go for college, why? Its better than high school, and you make more money when you get out. You dont have to, but if you want to get a job and have money, I would go. (If you dont want a job, go live in a box!)
