How do you feel about people who use smiley faces on their sentences.

This is just my opinion, but I'm sick and tired of people always using emoticons at the end of a sentence. Some people even use it after each sentence because they can't help it. Let me know what you think =)

I f****** hate it! Like i give a s*** if you're smiling or not. 23
I think it's stupid. People need to grow up. 17
I don't really care. 50
I love it! I use it all the time. 21
I think it's an effective way to communicate ones emotions online. 63
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • They're used, at least by me, as a way to punctuate a sentence, or promote a feeling behind it.

    Example:

"Aw, get lost." Would be taken one way.
"Aw, get lost. ;)" Would be taken, I suspect, entirely another.

In this case, the wink lets them know I'm being jaunty in nature, jesting.

I see them as the proverbial relish on the hot-dog of online communications.

I do it reflexively. It doesn't carry any significant meaning; except that this is the second sentence I've typed since I last did the obligatory :P found at the end of half to a third of my messages since my last relationship.

I don't care how you communicate. Clearly I don't care how I communicate if I'm willing to pepper otherwise semi-intelligent ramblings with an adult's monthly dose of :P

That way the other person knows you mean something in a nice way (: See... I'm being nice.

It's good to use it online (in an informal context) when a sentence could be perceived in the wrong way.

    PS. :)

I think I use it most often to lighten up anything that may sound harsher than I'd actually want it to sound...also when I'm ecstatic.

It all depends on the setting.

A professional letter or email - or even a text - in the workplace, or when you're representing your employer... smileys would be unprofessional.

However on your own, talking to friends and family, or just chatting on the internet... they're fine. If others get all bent out of shape over it, it's their own personal issue.

I think their pretty effective, if you are trying to show a certain meaning. Its hard to display things like sarcasm in text or joking without them.

Its nice if it's not overused, or I'll loose the distinction between if the person is communicating her emotions or just being a smiley-junkie.

It has to be done in a flirty kind of way. If you want to do that kind of stuff when you are talking to me then you have to be playing on me thinking you are sexy and stuff, else I'm gonna call you 'puss' for SO long and every other little thing you do. Then whenever I see you, I'll have to make fun of you. I guess I'm a big meanie. }:|

It makes boring text look nicer and show cool expressions, like if you want more chocolate, how about this one - 8D - wide-eyed smiley. Or if you're saying ha-ha and sticking your tongue out - :P See? I <3 emoticons.

  • 'I think it's an effective way to communicate ones emotions online' that one, you damnwell know it too cuz u put it as an option. By the way you just smiled at the end of YOUR sentance.

    • I put that option because i was trying to think of all the possible things someone would put as an answer. And you do know the smiley face was a joke right?
