How do you know if a download is safe?

If you are trying download a file from an official company but not from the official source how do you know if its legit? Like if you are trying to download software but the company does not actually have links for it on the website? Is it normal not to know how?

I download alot of shit. And half of it is making sure the file your downloading is adequate size and the other half is on a huge fuckin leap of faith. Point of the story is I now have the first Diablo and my warrior totally kicks ass.

Some companies have lists on their sites that tell you where there product can be found from reputable sites/dealers. There are sites that contain tips for avoiding Internet scams since some download can come attached with viruses. Some web browsers have a pop up system that comes up to warn you about any potentially dangerous sites. If you have a security system on your computer, your computer should be able to take care of any virus you come across. If you want to be extra careful, back up your computer before you download off sites you are unsure about.

I see. Do you have a protection plan on the computer? I ask because places like GeekSquad will install anti-virus software into your computer. I figure that the soft they use would be legitimate.

        • Well they gave me one that is suppose to work well but it only last a year. So that means it will run out. The one I installed from computer on my old computer worked really well and I had it for over 3 years without any issues. Since it was a permanent program I installed in my computer.

Okay. Have you tried to find the site where you downloaded the one that worked well?

            • Well I cant download the one I have currently. Since apparently it does not work on windows 8. So I need to find the updated version which is called something different. Yet when I go to Microsoft website it doesn't have a link for the program yet advertised it. So I have to go find the download on some other site since Microsoft itself does not have the link. I don't understand why they don't have links to their own program.

I would also like to add: To check if the source is actually safe and not some hack site, make sure you check the top left corner of your browser search box. There should be a green lock with HTTPS protocol which always, always confirms that the source is not fake.

I used to use McAfee SiteAdvisor's little toolbar but after I installed a new version of my browser I just kinda did away with it. Now I just use my better judgement.

Safe from what? I guess your anti-virus can help you with possible infections, if that's what you mean. Otherwise you can never be 100% sure about it.
