How many laps of a pool can you do without stopping?

In a standard 25 metre pool how many laps can you do without stopping? Stopping as in taking a minutes rest while you're in the pool. So if you stop just to get a breather that DOES count as stopping.

Military Basic Training requires you to be able to swim 3 miles non-stop normally and pass a test of a kilometer in full combat equipment.

Personal best was around 40 or so (Freestyle) but I doubt I'll do it again.

I can swim but I don't know how to breath. I don't get tired but after 5 laps I'm sputtering water.

  • I can go for about 15 to 20 laps. I'm not the strongest swimmer, but I practice a lot. For some reason, it won't let me vote on this poll. I haven't voted on it yet, so I don't know what's wrong...

    50. My Dad made me swim 50 when I was a kid, because he said if I couldn't then I still needed swimming lessons. I hated taking time out of my day to take useless (well not totally useless, but I knew all I needed to know anyway) lessons, so I just swam the 50. I was about 10 at the time?

I had to swim a mile for an award at school, which is 1609.344 metres, so 64 lengths and one width covers it. On the 64th length, I was flagging a bit and a couple of metres from the end, I just sank below the surface and had to stand up (lucky it wasn't the deep end). I didn't manage the width, and now I don't swim any more.

Yet another thing I came close to and didn't quite manage, like 100 hours without sleep.

    • Good thing really, being deprived of sleep for that long can cause you to collapse and get brain damage, or die.
