  • Like I say, I only download stuff that I wouldn't buy.

So nobody will lose money, as they wouldn't be getting it anyway.

I think people have forgotten the simple joy of waiting for an album to come out, saving up for it, going down the store when its released and picking up the copy, taking it home and playing it for the first time.

Downloading is less effort but less excitement I think and you haven't earnt it. I feel sorry this generation can't appreciate that.

That is how I get most of my music. I go to the electronics shop each week and buy a couple of CDs. They usually cost like a 4th of what they would charge for buying a DVD. I stopped finding interest in the CDs though.

    No.
To me it's the same as stealing. I take something that took money to make and don't pay for it.
And most of the reasons people download stuff whithout paying just sound crazy if you apply it to a non digital object:

"I only stole that jewelry because I didn't have so much money at the time. So it's okay."

"The food didn't look too tasty and I didn't want to pay for it. So I just took it and ran off."

If you say it's not really illegal or maybe a grey zone that still doesen't make it right. People make stuff and others buy it. And if it doesen't get bought it just doesen't get made anymore. That's how things work.

"Aww, I'm so sad that serial got cancelled. I loved it so much I stole every episode!"

Haha excellent comment, well put. If only more people would see it that way. I have grave concerns for the future of the film industry.

I prefer to own the things I like in physical form and support the artists and those who have helped produced that thing I like.

This. I mostly like bands no one has heard of, anyway.

Mostly comedy/cabaret, but some others. Top favourites would have to be Tom Dickins (solo, and with The Jane Austen Argument), Scott Edgar and the Universe, Martin Martini and the Bone Palace Orchestra, Yohosie and the Twoks (or anything involving Xani Kolac). How bout you?

All Melbourne based, on that list. Hah.

Haha I haven't heard of any of those. Looks like regurgitator will have to be our common ground music wise. (I am interested in hearing some of those artists you mentioned, their names alone are interesting!)

I like April's motel room, the chameleons, the feelies, beat happening, menomena, cyne, vespers descent

Many others but those are just a few of the bands no one I've talked to about music has heard of.

I used to spend all my money on games and films and then I wasn't earning as much in my last couple of years at uni so I started to download stuff for my PC. At one point I was downloading about 800 gbs of films and games a month. A lot of the stuff I wouldn't pay for so I don't really think I am stealing off anyone. I am earning a lot more money now and have started to buy games again however I don't think I will ever physically buy anymore films because it is so much easier to just download them.

Seeing as downloading isn't illegal, it's copyright infringement (which is a civil matter), I'm gonna say no-one has.

Not sure if this counts as illegal. I had a free app on my phone and downloaded a bunch of music. However later the app was shut down since it said it did not have the copyrights to any of that music. Yet it was at the app shop and it was one of the free ones and I paid monthly fee for service with unlimited app access, texting and calling. Some of the apps cost but I only downloaded the free ones. Does that count? I don't think it counts as my crime though.

Quite a bit. Movies that I watch more than once I will buy. Games are kind of a toss-up. 5+ year old games I'll download without issues. I'll also download ports onto other platforms. Music is completely random. If I have an iTunes card or something similar, I'll use it. If not...

I wish I knew how, but I'm not too computer literate.
Being stuck on a sailboat in the Caribbean (oh the horror of it all) it would be nice to have access to new movies and music. My internet connections aren't reliable or fast enough to successfully down load at times, so paying for downloads that screw up makes little sense.

Currently, I'm fortunate enough to buy my music. It hasn't always been this way though...

I try to buy music from artists I like and video from my country.

I do download about 80% of media without permission.
