How often should you call your family?

My wife, every day if possible . The rest of my family almost never. Maybe on holidays or when someone dies but other than that we never talk.

Once a week for about 10 minutes. I fucking hate doing it but I kinda have to.

Like you say, every family is different, so there's no one valid answer to this.

I was in the US military and stationed in Europe back in the bad old days when emails didn't exist and the cost of transatlantic phone calls was about $3 a minute in 2019 dollars. Months would go by between phone calls to my parents.

But then I have this idea that the proper attitude of parents should be that they get their kids ready to face the world, and once they're flying on their own, it's not reasonable to expect them to remain tied to the parental apron-strings. If kids don't regularly get in touch, that just means the parents have done their job right.

If your family knows that you're under a lot of pressure and have little free time, they should understand that catching up with them has to be a low priority for you right now. It wouldn't be unreasonable for them to expect you to at least make an effort to be with them or call them on important family dates and at the holidays, but as long as they know they can reach you if anything urgent comes up and as long as they can be sure they'll hear if anything dire happens to you, that should be enough.

Of course, if you're connected via social media, phone calls are something of an anachronism, since you'll probably know what's going on in their lives and they'll know how you're doing.

When I was living interstate, I'd call my mother and grandmother once a week each.

My folks are in their eighties, I call them, and tell them I love them on a daily basis.
