How to stay on track

It's hard for me to stay on track, When I am telling a story, especially when interrupted even slightly. My thoughts just seem to fade. why would this happen? I am 62 What will help me stay on track?

    Keep your mind active. Play challenging games, crossword puzzles, attend classes and learn something new, etc.
    .
    The other thing that helps a lot is set a goal that you want to achieve yet in your life that is going to take some work... then start and don't stop until you have achieved it, and then set another goal...
