Well the things you learn that strike an emotional chord with you, whether it's a positive or negative emotion (though usually the ones that evoke a positive emotion are remembered better), are the ones that your brain remembers more since it deems those things as important. Or to put it more simply it's the obvious conclusion that people have realised since the dawn of time: you remember things that you find interesting. So you need to make things more interesting and seemingly important.
One way to do that is to routinely give yourself a little pep talk about why that particular subject is so important and interesting.
Another is to make sure that you understand the bigger picture of the concept you're learning. That way memorising all the details becomes learning the little factoids and trivia about it, rather than just learning off a bunch of meaningless information.
Another way is to try to apply what you're learning to real world situations, so that your brain realises that this is relevant and that it's not all completely pointless.
You could watch videos about people explaining all the stuff to you, so it isn't all reading.
One thing I like to do is to imagine that someone's in front of you who wants to know about what it is you're learning, but they know absolutely nothing about it (like they're just a little kid or something). So you have to explain to them every single little thing about it in a way that they would understand, with absolutely no jargon (or at least none that you don't explain). It really helps to motivate you by showing to yourself how much you do know already compared to someone who really knows nothing about it.
I went back to school for a semester last year, and making flashcards really helped me. I would also record myself reading my textbooks out loud, and then listen again to my recording when I was doing boring household tasks.
Things you hear go into short term memory, things you read and see go into long term memory. Rehearse information. Get information into your semantic memory by revising in chunks, at different times, and try not to associate information with times or places, because those memories are more susceptible to distortion.
