How trump damaged science — and why it could take decades to recover

Trump’s actions have exacerbated the pandemic that has killed more than 200,000 people in the United States, rolled back environmental and public-health regulations and undermined science and scientific institutions. Some of the harm could be permanent.
US President Donald Trump’s rally in Henderson, Nevada, on 13 September contravened state health rules, which limit public gatherings to 50 people and require proper social distancing. Trump knew it, and later flaunted the fact that the state authorities failed to stop him. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the president has behaved the same way and refused to follow basic health guidelines at the White House, which is now at the centre of an ongoing outbreak. The president spent 3 days in a hospital after testing positive for COVID-19, and was released on 5 October.
Trump’s actions — and those of his staff and supporters — should come as no surprise. Over the past eight months, the president of the United States has lied about the dangers posed by the coronavirus and undermined efforts to contain it; he even admitted in an interview to purposefully misrepresenting the viral threat early in the pandemic. Trump has belittled masks and social-distancing requirements while encouraging people to protest against lockdown rules aimed at stopping disease transmission. His administration has undermined, suppressed and censored government scientists working to study the virus and reduce its harm. And his appointees have made political tools out of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), ordering the agencies to put out inaccurate information, issue ill-advised health guidance, and tout unproven and potentially harmful treatments for COVID-19.

Your Dr Fauci did more damage to science than Trump. Matter of fact the WHO and Fauci may have been the original source causing bad decisions by all countries and their leaders, including Trump.

WHO, CDC, and Fauci were all playing cover my ass and changing stories weekly and even daily in some cases. The fact that Fauci allowed his political views to influence his views and recommendations has damaged science forever. Everyone knows the president or leader or any country has political views and will lean that way, but the scientist is supposed to eliminate those political influences.

It's not lost on most of the world that the US big media loved playing Fauci against Trump. Fauci was supposed to be a science expert, however, did you ever hear the media say Fauci doesn't care about the economy or any other factors.

Yes if everybody sat home in their own room with no other contact for let's say three months, scientifically, the virus should die or end. But that's not possible and if it was the destruction to the world and death rate would be worse than the covid.

A leader can not go by one science, they must use all sciences and make a decision.

I used to like Fauci now not at all. He politicizes the virus. He condemns football games, & the Sturges bike rally, but he's okay with things like Lollapalooza, baseball, and Obama's birthday bash.

I stopped listening to his advice after he said New York was doing a great job... yeah 15,000 elderly people dying from sick being placed on their doorstep. Aparently that's a good job in Fauci's world.

When he shut down travel from china you liberal fucks were calling it racist. Hindsight is 2020. Shall I send ya some liberal articles from January 2020 saying covid is less dangerous than the flu?

The only people who should care about covid are the incredibly unhealthy and ancient people. He flaunted bullshit covid rules? Good. There shouldn't have been any federal or state inforced laws in the first place.

The person who wrote this has some series mental issues. Regardless of whether you like or dislike Trump, any honest person should admit that his administration cut regulations/red tape to streamline the vaccine approval process, resulting in a vaccine within one year instead of taking four or five years at a minimum.

And if you really want to complain about someone who lied about Covid, why not go after Tony Fauci, the head of the CDC? How many times has Fauci flip-flopped on the advice he’s given??

I would agree with the general notion that President Trump damaged science. However, I would use things other than Covid-19 as his real damage to science in general was to tell people that in many areas to not trust science and documented facts; but, instead go on what President Trump, and others, personally feel is right.

This affected the Covid-19 response; but the damage goes way beyond that. I would argue that the general mistrust of science and facts by a significantly larger portion of the US population will in the end be far more damaging to the US economy than Covid-19.

I also note that President Trump did not do this alone. It's all the other people who jumped on board that created such mistrust. If it was only President Trump there would have been minimal - if any - damage done.

You dont damage science. Let's be honest theres a cult of trump. But there is a WAY bigger cult of biden can do no wrong. Both ignore science.

What was by far more damaging of science was the authoritarian steps taken by our goverment to force vaccines on people. USA citizens are by far the worst people to do this to. By forcing people to have to wear masks and vaccinate sure you are doing great against covid numbers. Though what start to happen is people mistrusting the goverment even more than usual.

Bidens Vaccine mandate is VERY clearly illegal. It has to go through the house and the Senate to mandate private buisnesses and any fines that will be doled out. Shit like that is the reason why there are so many people like me that are pro vaccine but anti mandate and edict.

If there was zero mandates and edicts, sure we would have lots more deaths but that would just cause people vaccinate even more. The actual antivaxers would continue to spout but it's their right to.

I've been away for a few days. I'm away from home to assist a friend.

I have never said President Biden could do no wrong, and have met very few people who claims so. I've even rated him so far as just an average President (since JFK).

I feel that President Biden's direction to I believe it is OSHA to mandate a vaccine is likely legal. Of course, that will not be known until the regulation is implemented and challenged in court.

It is my understanding that OSHA has long standing mandates for certain other vaccines for health care and a few other workers; which have existed for decades.

I do not see why adding another vaccine to the list and broadening the industries affected would not be in the existing powers of OSHA. It is a general health threat to all workers (and not just heath care, etc.).

Life happens you do not have to update me on your personal affairs. As the goverment shouldnt have keep tabs on your personal life.

I would also expect some consistency on the subject of vaccines and ethics. I would be just as supporting of the vaccine mandates only if covid was bubonic plague level of damaging. Covid so far didnt disrupt the world that much due strictly to the illness itself. Thus what is the mass hysteria about when it comes to covid rather than a blatant power grab by those highest in goverment and in local power hierarchies. Some of these mayors really went overboard, far more inhumane then their policies spouted in public media. Leading to general distrust.

The economic instability and the authoritarian edicts that were set up during the beginning of covid should not be forgotten. Closing churches while allowing riots and protests that were clearly biased.

I'm asking as someone who is seeing his goverment creep closer and closer to the authoritarian line. In my opinion the line is where Australia currently is. Building quarantine "containment" zones for their own people. Disgusting.

Dividing people based on vaccination status is reminiscent of stitching star of David's into everyones jacket. The people who dont vaccinate dont pose a threat to those who do vaccinate. People want to make that choice, especially when there are doubters of the methods. Which is completely allowed.

Give it 20 years. Covid vaccinations could pass in public then. Rushing it and painting a happy face on the medical procedure doesnt mask how unsettling that is for people for a goverment to be pushing something that hard for something relatively "harmless" pandemic wise.
