Human pretending to be a cat - is it normal?
For 17 years I owned a beautiful cat, I even saw her being born, so she was pretty special to me. But sometimes she was very naughty and it seemed like I was in a power struggle with my cat. She would do things like try and bite an scratch which she hadn't done before. So I decided I had to display a level of dominance in a language my cat could understand.
So I began an experiment to pretend to be a big cat so that my little cat would relate to me as the dominant animal in the house.
I would do things like:
- Be on all fours and pretend to eat out of her bowl and make growling and hissing noises if she came near (tho I wasn't really eating, just pretending, but she didn't know the difference)
- Pretend to lick her fur like I was her mother ( though I wasn't really licking her fur, I was rubbing my chin with beard stubble on her fur, which to her I'm sure felt just like a big cats tongue)
- Pretend to sniff her around the face and neck – she used to get a bit freaked with this behaviour, I think she thought I was a dog
- On all fours I would pick her up from the scruff of her neck as a mother cat would do with its kittens, except I'd use my hand but pretend it was my mouth while making cat growling noises. (I don't think she noticed the difference.) She seemed to enjoy being picked up and would be completely relaxed while I did it.
I really began to notice that she seemed to be relating to me as her mother. She was often wanting to snuggle up next to me and sleep under the bed covers and purr away. Also she stopped biting and scratching me.
She's gone now ( she was run over by a car couple years back) R.I.P. little one.
