Human stock?

Okay... I go to a vocational technical school for culinary arts & hospitality, and we were having a lesson about stocks. Stock is basically home-made broth, which is made by boiling bones from a certain animal. Here's an example:
Chicken bones -> Boiled -> Chicken stock
Beef bones -> Roasted in oven & then boiled -> Beef stock
...and so on. A girl raised her hand, and my chef picked her for a question. She asked, "Well, what about humans? What about human stock?" And everybody, including me and our chef, gave her a weird look. She was legitly just trying to be a class clown, and it surely wasn't intended to be creepy. So, what do you guys think? I think it's not normal, but I'm curious as to what kind of responses I'll get.

  • It's normal, she was obviously joking. I tell cannibal jokes sometimes too, like this one:

A small plane with 6 people on it crashed up in the mountains. When the mountain rescue team arrived, they only found one guy and a big pile of bones. He said 'I had to eat them, I had no other choice!' The rescue team guy said: 'Okay, but it's only been 2 days since the crash.'

FYI, NEVER boil a stock. A slow simmer is the way you make a stock.

I make vegetable stocks all the time. I use it a lot for vegetarian cooking. You can also buy vegetable stock at the grocery store. :)

Yes, vegetable stock exists. It's basically the water used to boil vegetables, in which the water has soaked in alot of the vegetables' flavors.

  • thats a funny joke joeaverage but it mirrors the air crash in the andes. i watched a documentary, in about 1974 there was a crash with a group of engineers (i think) anyhow they had no food so they ate everything, makeup, soap then on the 8th day they started eating the corpses. one wouldnt and walked to get help. the footage of their return showed them fatter than when they left home

You can't say that to me at 1am, devilla. I have to go to bed soon and I'm now going to be dreaming about Edwina Scissorhands Stockgirl coming for me.

Was that the cutlery drawer? You have no idea how much this has made me laugh. I'm still going to be laughing at it when I wake up tomorrow. If I do wake up tomorrow that is. I may be soup by then.

I know this is slightly off-topic but I had no idea you had to bake beef bones before making stock with them. I'm a vegetarian so I don't know this stuff, blah, blah, blah, but I'm still curious. Why do you have to bake them? This isn't a trick question, by the way. I'm just curious.

P.S. I'd happily date the human stock girl. If she's still available, send her my way.

Beef stock, broth, and base is known for it's brown color. The bones are roasted to develop a brown color and roasted flavor, so it may add color and flavor to the stock when you go to boil your roasted bones. :)

I've learned something there. Thank you. Oh, and shame about the human stock girl. But there are plenty more cannibals in the sea...
