I am like an amateur scientist studying my backyard.

I am mesmerized by nature. I'm like a nerd scientist if I'm free in the afternoon, or on the weekend. I start studying things like plants and bugs. Is this completely weird? I will end up spending a few hours reading up what I find. Its crazy what exists in your backyard! Molds are the weirdest, creepiest of things. I've got lizards outside my house. Its a microscopic jungle out there. I'm looking to buy myself some tools to play scientist whenever I want. I've been grabbing local samples from a nearby stream to see what's in it. I hope I don't discover any dangerous environmental pollutants. But, it could happen. This is unusual, right? It bores everyone I know.

I used to do more of that as a kid... whenever i went to a river i would smash rocks with other rocks, hoping to find a gem someday... never did, but i found some other nice crystals and fossils... mold is pretty cool same with fungi... and we have lizards here too but just small ones, and tree frogs, never seen them just heard them ^-^

Hardly boring, hardly unusual. What makes you think it's weird? Your friends? Well, these friends sound lame.

You seem self conscious about it. Go with it, study, be happy.

I love lightning bugs!!! I knew a chick who said she used to catch them and smear their asses on her fingernails like "nail polish " and proceeded to do so and show me >:o I wanted to kill her so fuckin hard!

You may be weird but you're top notch buddy material in my book!

        • I would never ever ever EVER do something like that. Instead, if someone did that in front of me, I would proceed to take the nail polish and STUFF it up their nose as karmic justice.

I only gently catch lightning bugs to watch up close for minutes, then release them. They live such tiny short lives as is. Let them be free.

I spend as much time as I can just floating over the reefs around the islands we visit, watching all the sea creatures interacting and going about their lives. I can spend hours just watching these creatures; octopi, squid, all the various fish and the crustaceans. Some fish have cleaning stations where other fish come to get the parasites removed. There are actually fish that lurk on the bottom and look exactly like lizards. Each creature seems to have something to do, all the time.
So I can understand how you might find creatures that fascinate you in your yard.

I think it's pretty cool, but then again I had a little microscope as a kid.

Sounds like a very normal, educational hobby to me.
